Nitric oxide controls proliferation of Leishmania major by inhibiting the recruitment of permissive host cells

Pauline Formaglio et al.

Summary: Nitric oxide plays a dual role in controlling Leishmania major by directly killing the pathogen and restricting the supply of host cells necessary for pathogen proliferation.

Total Phenolic Fraction (TPF) from Extra Virgin Olive Oil: Induction of apoptotic-like cell death in Leishmania spp. promastigotes and in vivo potential of therapeutic immunomodulation

Kalliopi Karampetsou et al.

Summary: Total Phenolic Fraction (TPF) derived from Extra Virgin Olive Oil (EVOO) exhibits anti-leishmanial activity by inducing apoptotic-like programmed cell death in Leishmania spp. promastigotes, and also enhances the protective Th1-type immune response in experimental cutaneous leishmaniasis in vivo. These findings suggest TPF has potential as both a chemotherapeutic agent and an immunomodulator against leishmaniasis.

IL-10 and TGF-β Induced Arginase Expression Contributes to Deficient Nitric Oxide Response in Human Visceral Leishmaniasis

Manu Kupani et al.

Summary: Nitric oxide (NO) is an important anti-microbial effector of the innate immune system, but suboptimal production is often found in patients with visceral leishmaniasis (VL). This is associated with significantly lower levels of NO and elevated arginase activity in the plasma of VL patients. Furthermore, VL patients also show higher levels of IL-10 and TGF-beta, which regulate the expression of arginase and contribute to the suppression of NO production.

Immunotherapy in treatment of leishmaniasis

Maryam Akbari et al.

Summary: Leishmaniasis is a parasitic disease transmitted by sand fly vectors, causing a range of clinical features. Current treatments lack an effective vaccine, with chemotherapy being toxic and expensive. Immunotherapy has emerged as an alternative treatment option, aiming to reduce the toxicity of drugs and drug resistance.
