Mating Interactions between Schistosoma bovis and S. mansoni and Compatibility of Their F1 Progeny with Biomphalaria glabrata and Bulinus truncatus

Amos Mathias Onyekwere et al.

Summary: This experimental study provides new insights into the mating behavior between Schistosoma bovis and S. mansoni in mixed infections in mice. The study shows that the mating between the two species is not random, with S. mansoni exhibiting greater mate recognition. The offspring generated from different mating pairs of the two species can only infect specific mollusks.

Variability of Calodium hepaticum eggs from sigmodontine host species through geometric morphometric analysis

M. C. Fantozzi et al.

Summary: This study genetically and morphologically characterized the eggs of C. hepaticum from three species of sigmodontine rodents in Argentina. The results showed that there were size differences in the parasite eggs among the three species, and A. azarae was identified as the main reservoir host for C. hepaticum in the New World.

Acute Schistosomiasis With a Schistosoma mattheei x Schistosoma haematobium Hybrid Species in a Cluster of 34 Travelers Infected in South Africa

Lieselotte Cnops et al.

Summary: The diagnosis of schistosomiasis in a group of travelers with freshwater exposure in South Africa was evaluated using various diagnostic methods. Results showed that eosinophil count, Schistosoma antibody tests, and PCR assays were effective in confirming the diagnosis, with sequencing identifying a hybrid species. These findings suggest that Dral PCR can confirm the diagnosis at an earlier stage than traditional tests and may be useful in identifying hybrid species.

Population genetics of African Schistosoma species

O. Rey et al.

Summary: This paper reviews the genetic studies of both animal and human infecting schistosomes, discussing population genetic structures at different spatial scales, genetic diversity within species, and the impact of factors such as mass drug administration. The paper also explores the ability for intra-species hybridisation and its implications for control and elimination measures.

Evidence of autochthonous transmission of urinary schistosomiasis in Almeria (southeast Spain): An outbreak analysis

Joaquin Salas-Coronas et al.

Summary: Evidence of autochthonous transmission of urogenital schistosomiasis was presented in Almeria, Spain in 2003, affecting 4 out of 5 farmers who bathed in an irrigation pool. DNA sequencing confirmed that the local vector species were identical to those found in Senegal. Although no new cases have been reported, there may have been unnoticed cases due to asymptomatic or mild symptoms.

No pre-zygotic isolation mechanisms between Schistosoma haematobium and Schistosoma bovis parasites: From mating interactions to differential gene expression

Julien Kincaid-Smith et al.

Summary: The study found that mate choice is not a reproductive isolating factor between Schistosoma haematobium and S. bovis, and there are few pre-zygotic barriers limiting interbreeding between these two species, except for spatial isolation by the final vertebrate host.

Aedes albopictus diversity and relationships in south-western Europe and Brazil by rDNA/mtDNA and phenotypic analyses: ITS-2, a useful marker for spread studies

Patricio Artigas et al.

Summary: The study focused on Aedes albopictus from southwestern Europe and Brazil, revealing significant genetic and phenotypic diversity at a global level. Different genetic and morphometric markers were used to show variations between populations in terms of evolutionary exchanges and distinctive characteristics. The findings emphasize the importance of regular surveillance to prevent the introduction of highly virus-transmitting Aedes albopictus into Europe.

DNA Multi-Marker Genotyping and CIAS Morphometric Phenotyping of Fasciola gigantica-Sized Flukes from Ecuador, with an Analysis of the Radix Absence in the New World and the Evolutionary Lymnaeid Snail Vector Filter

Maria Dolores Bargues et al.

Summary: Fasciolid flukes obtained from sheep and cattle in Ecuador displayed high genetic diversity with DNA sequences suggesting introductions from various countries. Abnormally large liver flukes were found in Ecuador, indicating possible past hybridization events. The presence of these features in Ecuadorian fasciolids may be linked to livestock import activities in the region.

Natural Intra- and Interclade Human Hybrid Schistosomes in Africa with Considerations on Prevention through Vaccination

Ursula Panzner et al.

Summary: Schistosomiasis is caused by dioecious, digenean schistosomes affecting humans in 76 countries. The prevention of this disease involves multiple measures, including vaccination with candidates like Sm14, Sm-TSP-2/Sm-TSP-2Al(R), Smp80/SchistoShield(R), and Sh28GST/Bilhvax(R). Hybridization of schistosome species leads to genetic diversity and potential extinction, impacting control and prevention efforts. Phylogenetic distance between species plays a key role in hybridization, with closer species more likely to hybridize. Research on human schistosomal hybrids highlights the need for comprehensive control and prevention strategies, including vaccination programs.
