Barriers to Adoption of a Secure Text Messaging System: a Qualitative Study of Practicing Clinicians

Thomas F. Byrd et al.

Summary: This study aims to understand the barriers to adoption of a Secure Text Messaging System (STMS) among physicians and advanced practice providers (APPs). The study found that clinicians commonly believed the STMS to be unnecessary and burdensome, with concerns about personal device use and battery drain. Ambiguity regarding reachable contacts in the app and exclusion of other care team members were also identified as barriers to adoption.

Thomas F. Byrd et al.

Summary: This study investigated the adoption of secure text messaging systems (STMS) among hospitalists for patient care-related communication. The results showed an increase in STMS usage and a decrease in pager usage compared to 2016. However, many hospitalists still use both STMS and pagers, which may pose a risk of communication overload.
