Clustering sequential navigation patterns in multiple-source reading tasks with dynamic time warping method

Qiwei He et al.

Summary: This study examines students' navigation patterns in digital reading tasks and their associations with reading performance and socio-demographic characteristics. The findings suggest that students who visit all the pages and spend more time reading without rush transitions perform better in reading. Girls achieve higher scores when using longer navigation sequences with shorter reading time. On the other hand, students with limited navigation and shorter reading time have lower socio-economic status.

Multiple-Group Joint Modeling of Item Responses, Response Times, and Action Counts with the Conway-Maxwell-Poisson Distribution

Xin Qiao et al.

Summary: Multiple group modeling is an effective method to address the issue of measurement noninvariance. This study focuses on joint modeling of response times, action counts, and item responses in computer-based assessments. The Conway-Maxwell-Poisson distribution is used to model different types of dispersion in action counts. The results of an empirical analysis using PISA 2015 data demonstrate that the proposed model fits the data better than alternative count data models and provides additional information on group performance differences.

Using sequence mining to study students? calculator use, problem solving, and mathematics achievement in the National Assessment of Educational Progress (NAEP)

Yang Jiang et al.

Summary: This study examines the use of interactive tools in a digitally-based large-scale assessment, focusing on the example of onscreen calculators. The findings reveal that students' calculator-use behaviors and content vary based on the characteristics of the items. Students who use calculators more frequently on calculation-demanding items and use them in a more efficient and proficient manner demonstrate higher mathematical proficiency.

Combining Clickstream Analyses and Graph-Modeled Data Clustering for Identifying Common Response Processes

Esther Ulitzsch et al.

Summary: Complex interactive test items are increasingly used in assessments to investigate how examinees approach items and make responses. Research shows that considering timing data on the action-level provides a more accurate assessment of examinees' behavior, offering a method that jointly considers action sequences and time data.

A Comparison of Full Information Maximum Likelihood and Multiple Imputation in Structural Equation Modeling With Missing Data

Taehun Lee et al.

Summary: This article systematically compares two classes of modern missing data procedures, maximum likelihood (ML) and multiple imputation (MI). The study shows that these procedures may not produce equivalent results empirically under realistic conditions where researchers work with imperfect models. Despite producing essentially equivalent results when the model is correctly specified, significant differences were found between FIML and MI estimators when the hypothesized model does not exactly hold in the population. This suggests the importance of considering the interplay between parsimony and accuracy of the imputation model in handling missing data.

Improving the Precision of Ability Estimates Using Time-On-Task Variables: Insights From the PISA 2012 Computer-Based Assessment of Mathematics

Denise Reis Costa et al.

Summary: By analyzing the time spent by students on mathematics tests, this study found that incorporating response times and task time measurements can improve the accuracy of ability estimates. It also revealed differences between countries in how students approach test items and their response processes. Additionally, the study showed that including response times can capture additional information through differences in modeling structure, although this may not align with the testing objective.

Process data, the new frontier for assessment development: rich new soil or a quixotic quest?

Stephen Provasnik

Summary: This paper presents concepts and observations from the author's keynote address at a conference, recapping key points from a symposium and suggesting common terminology for future discussion. It critically examines the ethical implications of process data and discusses the applications and challenges of using process data and logfiles. The paper also maps out how process data interacts with the development and operation of assessment systems, offering new ways to improve assessment processes and ultimately cognitive skill measurement.
