Single Calcium Channel Nanodomains Drive Presynaptic Calcium Entry at Lamprey Reticulospinal Presynaptic Terminals

Shankar Ramachandran et al.

Summary: This study investigates the number, subtypes, and locations of Ca2+ channels involved in neurotransmitter release at central synapses. By using single channel analysis and lattice light-sheet microscopy, the researchers discovered that a small pool of Ca2+ channels, comprising N-, P/Q-, and R-subtypes, are available to gate neurotransmitter release. They also found that as few as one channel may trigger neurotransmitter release. These findings provide important insights into the understanding of Ca2+ channel and synaptic dysfunction.

Synaptic Integration of Subquantal Neurotransmission by Colocalized G Protein-Coupled Receptors in Presynaptic Terminals

Emily Church et al.

Summary: Presynaptic inhibition plays a crucial role in presynaptic terminals, with GABAB receptors inhibiting Ca2+ entry and 5-HT1B receptors targeting SNARE complexes. The colocalization of these receptors provides synaptic integration and allows for complex presynaptic integration.

Deformation Measurements of Neuronal Excitability Using Incoherent Holography Lattice Light-Sheet Microscopy (IHLLS)

Mariana Potcoava et al.

Summary: Stimuli and cellular processes can lead to cell surface deformations, which may be difficult to image using traditional methods. However, the IHLLS-2L technique allows for quantifying cell membrane deformation in neurons without the need for actuation of a sample stage or detection microscope objective.

Fast, multiplane line-scan confocal microscopy using axially distributed slits

Jean-Marc Tsang et al.

Summary: This study presents a multiplane line-scan imaging strategy using reflecting slits to probe different depths, enabling simultaneous imaging of optically sectioned image stack with a single camera at frame rates of hundreds of hertz. The system is demonstrated to be applicable for monitoring fast dynamics in biological samples.

Spatio-temporal performance in an incoherent holography lattice light-sheet microscope (IHLLS)

Mariana Potcoava et al.

Summary: The IHLLS system utilizes incoherent holography detection technique for 3D imaging, offering intrinsic instrumental simplicity and high accuracy compared to the original LLS schemes. It provides similar or better transverse performance and enables faster volume acquisition compared to LLS technique.
