Why care about theories? Innovative ways of theorizing in sustainability science

Maja Schluter et al.

Summary: The complex nature of sustainability problems demands a rethinking of how theories are constructed and utilized in order to support interdisciplinary and transdisciplinary processes. Four ideal modes of theorizing and the concept of 'ecologies of theories' are proposed to meet the challenges and needs of sustainability science.

Modelling landscape management scenarios for equitable and sustainable futures in rural areas based on ecosystem services

Maria R. Felipe-Lucia et al.

Summary: Scenario analysis is a valuable technique for informing landscape planning in social-ecological systems. This study examines the effects of land management on the supply and distribution of ecosystem services in floodplain agroecosystems. The results show that scenarios promoting active ecological restoration provide more services and benefit a wider range of societal sectors compared to scenarios focused on provisioning services. Additionally, two consistent service bundles were identified across scenarios, highlighting the impact of land management on ecosystem services. Landscape scale management that balances ecosystem functioning and provisioning services can supply a more diverse set of services and contribute to equitable and sustainable futures in rural areas.

Embedding interdisciplinary learning into the first-year undergraduate curriculum: drivers and barriers in a cross-institutional enhancement project

Rebecca Turner et al.

Summary: This paper discusses the limitations of interdisciplinary learning in the English higher education system and reports on an enhancement project aimed at engaging first-year students with interdisciplinary learning. Data collected from staff interviews, student focus groups, and module enrollments reveal that while there are many driving factors, there are also numerous barriers, including administrative and ideological issues. Student responses to this learning approach were mixed, with some desiring more options for interdisciplinary modules and others feeling the need for more support to participate.

Scientific research on ecosystem services and human well-being: A bibliometric analysis

Bojie Wang et al.

Summary: Global research on ecosystem services and human well-being has shown increasing interest, especially after the Millennium Ecosystem Assessment, with a substantial increase in the number of publications. The majority of research has focused on descriptive and quantitative analysis of ecosystem services, while future studies are expected to focus on integrative research on socio-cultural and biophysical dimensions.

Investigating tradeoffs between supply, use and demand of ecosystem services and their effective drivers for sustainable environmental management

Azam Khosravi Mashizi et al.

Summary: Ecosystem services have a significant impact on social systems, with sustainable management requiring considerations of spatial relationships between supply, demand, and use. It is important to identify management priorities in order to simplify and address the complex relationships between ecological and social systems. The study in Iran's semiarid landscapes revealed a synergy between supply, demand, and use of ecosystem services in highlands, while deficit zones were concentrated in lowlands, with provisioning services being crucial for social well-being.

Research effort devoted to regulating and supporting ecosystem services by environmental scientists and economists

Andrew N. Kadykalo et al.

Summary: The economic valuation of ecosystem services aims to use conventional economic tools, but estimating the value requires understanding ecological functions first. Research efforts by environmental scientists and economists show a positive correlation, with differences in focus on ecosystem services rather than types.

Governance of ecosystem services: a review of empirical literature

Klara Johanna Winkler et al.

Summary: Researchers have explored various governance modes for ecosystem services, with a focus on qualitative and mixed methods. No single governance mode dominates the research field, with researchers studying different modes in combination. The geographical distribution of ecosystem services governance research is diverse, but certain regions like Southeast Asia lack representation, potentially impacting decision-makers in those areas.
