A bioartificial transgenic porcine whole liver expressing human proteins alleviates acute liver failure in pigs

Wei-Song Xue et al.

Summary: The safety and efficacy of a transgenic porcine liver synthesizing human albumin and coagulation factor VII within a bioartificial system were evaluated. The transgenic pig livers were able to synthesize and secrete the human proteins while maintaining their normal liver functions, showing potential for treating acute liver failure.

The liver transplant surgeon Mondays blues: an Italian perspective

Silvia Quaresima et al.

Summary: Poor data exist on the influence of holidays and weekdays on the number and the results of liver transplantation in Italy. This study aimed to investigate the impact of holidays and different days of the week on the number of liver transplantations and early graft survival rates. The study found that fewer liver transplantations were performed on holidays and Mondays, but the survival rates were not affected by holidays or the day of transplantation.

Report Reversal of liver failure using a bioartificial liver device implanted with clinical-grade human-induced hepatocytes

Yifan Wang et al.

Summary: Liver resection is the preferred treatment for primary liver cancers, but concerns about post-hepatectomy liver failure have limited the number of eligible patients. A bioartificial liver device using human-induced hepatocytes showed promising results in a PHLF model and in a small study of patients undergoing liver resection. These findings suggest that this treatment could potentially expand the population eligible for liver resection.

Bioartificial livers: a review of their design and manufacture

Kahaer Tuerxun et al.

Summary: Liver transplantation and artificial liver support systems are the major therapies for acute liver failure. Bioartificial livers, composed of functional hepatocytes, have more advantages and potential to support patients as a bridging therapy.

Artificial liver support systems

Radhika Tandon et al.

Summary: The review compared the efficiency of two artificial liver systems, SPAD and MARS, in aiding the recovery of acute liver failure. The results showed that both systems had a similar average reduction in key biochemical markers, indicating no significant difference in effectiveness. More randomized control trials are needed to further evaluate the cost and patient preference in differentiating between these systems.
