Self-expanding intestinal expansion sleeves (IES) for short gut syndrome

S. Clayton et al.

Summary: This study introduces a novel self-expanding mesh prototype intestinal expanding sleeve (IES) for the treatment of short-gut syndrome (SGS). The method involves implanting the device inside the intestines, resulting in significant lengthening in both the large and small intestines, aiding in increasing absorptive surface area while maintaining longitudinal tension. Through mechanical testing and experimental validation, the potential of IES in treating SGS is demonstrated.

Treatment for vaginal agenesis: A prospective and comparative study between vaginal dilation and surgical neovaginoplasty

Vanessa R. Apfel et al.

Summary: The study compared the effectiveness of progressive dilation and surgical neovaginoplasty for women with vaginal agenesis in terms of anatomical, functional, and sexual aspects. Both treatments showed satisfactory efficacy with statistically significant improvement in neo-vagina formation. Neither treatment had statistical differences in total vaginal length measurements or Female Sexual Function Index scores.

Animal Models and Alternatives in Vaginal Research: a Comparative Review

Jennifer M. McCracken et al.

Summary: Progress in gynecologic health research is ongoing, but few groups focus specifically on vaginal tissue research. There is currently no standardized animal or tissue model that fully replicates the complexity of the human vagina. Researchers must compromise specific properties of the vaginal environment to fit their scientific questions.
