Impact of short chain fatty acids (SCFAs) on antimicrobial activity of new β-lactam/β-lactamase inhibitor combinations and on virulence of Escherichia coli isolates

Ashraf A. A. Kadry et al.

Summary: This study assessed the inhibitory activity of short chain fatty acids (SCFAs) and their impact on new beta-lactam/beta-lactamase inhibitor combinations. Results showed that SCFAs have an inhibitory effect on pathogens and can restore the susceptibility of isolates to beta-lactam/beta-lactamase inhibitors. Furthermore, SCFAs influence bacterial growth and virulence in a pH and concentration-dependent manner.

Medicinal Plants for Prophylaxis and Therapy of Common Infectious Diseases In Poultry-A Systematic Review of In Vivo Studies

Patricia Farinacci et al.

Summary: This review systematically identified and evaluated various plant species for prophylaxis and therapy of common infectious diseases in poultry caused by bacteria and gastrointestinal protozoa. The results showed that plants like Artemisia annua and Origanum vulgare have promising effects, including antimicrobial and antiprotozoal properties, making them potential candidates for treatment in poultry.

In vitro digestibility and fermentability profiles of wheat starch modified by chlorogenic acid

Dan Li et al.

Summary: This study investigated the effect of chlorogenic acid (CA) on starch digestibility and fermentability. The results showed that WS-CA complexes had a looser gel matrix and higher solubility and swelling power. The addition of CA significantly reduced the digestive rate of gelatinized WS and increased the proportion of resistant starch (RS). After fermentation, the residual WS-CA complexes induced the production of short-chain fatty acids and promoted the growth of beneficial gut microbiota.

The Use of Probiotic Megasphaera elsdenii as a Pre-Harvest Intervention to Reduce Salmonella in Finishing Beef Cattle: An In Vitro Model

Kellen Habib et al.

Summary: This study aimed to investigate the impact of using Megasphaera elsdenii (ME) as a probiotic on Salmonella populations in cattle. The results showed that treating feces with ME significantly reduced the concentration of Salmonella, while treating ruminal fluid had no significant effect.

Effects of supplementing hen diet with Lavandula angustifolia and/or Mentha spicata essential oils on production performance, egg quality and blood variables of laying hens

Mehran Torki et al.

Summary: The study showed that using lavender and/or mint essential oils did not significantly impact the performance and egg quality of laying hens, but mint essential oil alone increased feed conversion ratio and decreased egg production compared to lavender. Lavender essential oil was more effective in increasing egg production.

Host genetics exerts lifelong effects upon hindgut microbiota and its association with bovine growth and immunity

Peixin Fan et al.

Summary: Research shows that host genetics has a significant impact on the structure of gut microbiota, with breed composition influencing the core bacterial taxa at different growth stages. Additionally, this study identified specific bacteria associated with breed composition, highlighting the dynamic and lifelong effects of host genetics on gut microbiota.

Co-selection of antibiotic resistance genes, and mobile genetic elements in the presence of heavy metals in poultry farm environments

Sohaib H. Mazhar et al.

Summary: Environmental selection of antibiotic resistance genes (ARGs) in livestock is primarily influenced by metal residues, with metals having a greater impact on ARG profile compared to antibiotics. Bacterial composition and horizontal gene transfer are key factors shaping the composition of ARGs.

Comparison between 16S rRNA and shotgun sequencing data for the taxonomic characterization of the gut microbiota

Francesco Durazzi et al.

Summary: This study compared the taxonomic results obtained from 16S rRNA gene sequencing and whole shotgun metagenomic sequencing, finding that shotgun sequencing is more capable of identifying rare taxa in chicken gut microbiota profiling. Additionally, the less abundant genera detected only by shotgun sequencing were found to be biologically meaningful.

Effects of Horsetail (Equisetum arvense) and Spirulina (Spirulina platensis) Dietary Supplementation on Laying Hens Productivity and Oxidative Status

Vincenzo Tufarelli et al.

Summary: The study found that supplementing laying hens' diet with horsetail and spirulina did not have a detrimental effect on productive parameters. Spirulina was more effective in improving blood traits and oxidative status of the laying hens.

Probiotics, Photobiomodulation, and Disease Management: Controversies and Challenges

Laura Marinela Ailioaie et al.

Summary: In recent years, researchers have discovered a relationship between whole microbial colonization and the development of medical disorders, leading to the development of new microbial products to maintain the health of the intestinal microbiome. The interactions between probiotics and the human microbiome in photobiology are essential for individuals with immune imbalances. Innovative treatments are urgently needed to effectively interact with the microbiome and human immune system in the coronavirus crisis.

Tackling Antimicrobial Resistance in the Shadow of COVID-19

Ami Patel

Summary: The COVID-19 pandemic has posed a challenge to combating antimicrobial-resistant bacterial infections, with an increased use of antimicrobial agents and antibiotics. Sexually transmitted infections, often caused by drug-resistant pathogens, have been underreported during the pandemic, highlighting the importance of research in this area. In a recent article, researchers focused on protection against Neisseria gonorrhoeae infection through the delivery of an antibody modified for increased complement activation, highlighting the potential of nucleic acid approaches in combating antimicrobial resistance.

Occurrence and antibacterial resistance of culturable antibiotic-resistant bacteria in the Fildes Peninsula, Antarctica

Guangshui Na et al.

Summary: Analyzing the occurrence of Antarctic antibiotic-resistant bacteria is crucial for evaluating pollution levels and understanding the baseline of ARB in uninhabited environments. The study detected high abundances of ciprofloxacin- and sulfamethazine-resistant bacteria, with Pseudomonas and Arthrobacter as dominant genera. A novel observation of strong positive correlations between mobile genetic elements and ARGs in the Antarctic suggests the presence of mechanisms for antibiotic resistance in the region.
