Enantio- and Regioselective Electrooxidative Cobalt-Catalyzed C-H/N-H Annulation with Alkenes

Qi-Jun Yao et al.

Summary: In recent years, the merging of electrosynthesis with 3d metal catalyzed C-H activation has been developed as an effective technique in organic synthesis. However, an enantioselective version of this technique is still challenging. This study presents the first electrooxidative cobalt-catalyzed enantioselective C-H/N-H annulation with olefins at room temperature. The mechanism of the reaction was elucidated through cyclovoltametric studies and the preparation of cobaltacycle intermediates.

Cobalt/Salox-Catalyzed Enantioselective C-H Functionalization of Arylphosphinamides

Qi-Jun Yao et al.

Summary: This study reports an unprecedented enantioselective C-H functionalization enabled by a simple cobalt/salicyloxazoline (Salox) catalysis. Chiral Salox ligands can be easily prepared in one step and used for the synthesis of various P-stereogenic compounds with high yields and excellent enantioselectivities. The isolation and characterization of several intermediates provide insights into the mechanism of active catalytic cobalt species generation, the action of Salox ligands, and the mode of stereocontrol.

A switch to vinylogous reactivity of vinyl diazo esters for the C-H allylation of benzamides by merging cobalt and photoredox catalysis

Nandkishor Prakash Khot et al.

Summary: In this study, a novel vinylogous reactivity of vinyl diazo esters in the C-H bond allylation of benzamides has been developed by combining cobalt and photoredox catalysis. The key factor for the success of this reaction is the close interaction between the high valent cobalt catalyst and the photocatalyst. The reaction utilizes oxygen as the sole oxidant and only generates benign nitrogen as a by-product. It demonstrates a broad substrate scope for both vinyl diazo esters and benzamides.

The cobalt(ii)-catalyzed acyloxylation of picolinamides with bifunctional silver carboxylate via C-H bond activation

Yongqi Yao et al.

Summary: A cobalt(ii)-catalyzed C-H bond acyloxylation of picolinamides with bifunctional silver carboxylate has been developed. This operationally simple acyloxylation allows for efficient synthesis of 8-functionalized 1-naphthylamine under mild conditions without the need for additional oxidants and base additives. The mild and practical acyloxylation approach provides a pathway for accessing highly functionalized polysubstituted naphthalene compounds and for modifying drug molecules and natural products.

Cobalt-catalyzed C(sp2)-H bond imination of phenylalanine derivatives

Lukass Lukasevics et al.

Summary: In this study, we reported a cobalt-catalyzed C-H arylation method using picolinamide as a directing group for phenylalanine derivatives. The reaction displayed good tolerance towards various functional groups and exhibited high yields. The obtained imine products can be easily transformed to 1-aminoisoquinoline derivatives under reductive conditions, providing an attractive alternative. Control experiments suggested that C-H activation might proceed via an electrophilic pathway.

Cobalt-Catalyzed C(sp2)-H Carbonylation of Amino Acids Using Picolinamide as a Traceless Directing Group

Lukass Lukasevics et al.

Summary: An efficient protocol for the C(sp(2))-H carbonylation of amino acid derivatives based on an inexpensive cobalt(II) salt catalyst is reported. The method utilizes picolinamide as a traceless directing group and Co(dpm)(2) as the catalyst, allowing for a broad range of phenylalanine derivatives bearing diverse functional groups to be tolerated. Moreover, the method can be successfully applied for the C(sp(2))-H carbonylation of short peptides, enabling access for peptide late-stage carbonylation.

O-Directed C-H functionalization via cobaltacycles: a sustainable approach for C-C and C-heteroatom bond formations

Shyam Kumar Banjare et al.

Summary: This review highlights recent advances in cobalt-catalysed C-H functionalization, emphasizing the use of oxygen atom coordination for sustainable synthesis. While nitrogen-directed functionalizations are well explored, the use of oxygen as a weakly coordinating atom for C-H activation remains largely underdeveloped. The application of cobalt and weakly coordinating directing groups, such as oxygen, shows promise for selective C-H functionalization reactions in the pharmaceutical industry, with potential for further development beyond C-C and C-N bond formation.
