A Fluorescent Nanosensor for Silver (Ag+) and Mercury (Hg2+) Ions Using Eu (III)-Doped Carbon Dots

Catia Correia et al.

Summary: Carbon dots doped with Eu3+ ions were synthesized and their interaction and luminescence properties were characterized by vibrational spectroscopy and UV-vis excitation spectroscopy. The Eu3+ ions are strongly coordinated with the carboxylate groups at the surface of the Cdots and incorporated within the nanographene network in the carbon core. The luminescence of the Cdots is strongly quenched by Hg2+ and Ag+, and a ratiometric sensor can be built using their luminescence intensities ratio.

Summary: In this study, top-down syntheses of carbon dots (CDs) from four different carbon precursors were conducted. The optical properties and surface functionalities of the CDs showed similarity and were mainly affected by the synthesis method, whereas the sizes, morphologies, chemical compositions, and core structures of the CDs were heavily influenced by the carbon precursors. The formation processes and structural models of these CDs were proposed based on the systematic study. Furthermore, the cell cytotoxicity and photothermal conversion efficiency of the CDs were evaluated, demonstrating their potential applications in photothermal therapy.

Competition of the roles of π-conjugated domain between emission center and quenching origin in the photoluminescence of carbon dots depending on the interparticle separation

Hyo Jeong Yoo et al.

Summary: This study investigates the impact of the pi-conjugated domain on the photoluminescence (PL) phenomenon of carbon dots (CDs) under different interparticle separation conditions, using three types of CDs with varying degrees of carbonization achieved by solvothermal reactions in different alcoholic solvents. At low dispersion, CDs from different solvents exhibit two emissive centers with varying relative intensities based on the degree of carbonization. The higher pi-conjugated domain content in CDs leads to a shift in the dominant PL center from surface- to core-state as CD concentration increases.

Carbogenic π-conjugated domains as the origin of afterglow emissions in carbon dot-based organic composite films

Lu Zhai et al.

Summary: A simple solid-phase synthesis approach at ambient pressure was proposed for the production of CDs with yellow fluorescence emissions, which were embedded in a PVA matrix to generate composite films with activated afterglow emissions. It was found that the incorporation of an aromatic precursor enlarged the carbogenic pi-conjugated domains of CDs, which were suggested as the main origin of the afterglow emissions. Tunable fluorescence and afterglow emissions were achieved by pre-treating the CDs or post-treating the composite film with an alkaline solution, resulting in a pure blue afterglow emission film with improved properties.
