In vivo aging of zirconia dental ceramics - Part I: Biomedical grade 3Y-TZP

Andraz Kocjan et al.

Summary: The study evaluated in vivo aging of biomedical grade 3Y-TZP ceramics in the oral environment and compared it with artificially accelerated in vitro hydrothermal aging at 37 degrees C. The results showed that there were no significant differences in aging between finer and coarser-grained specimens in vivo, but aging rates varied depending on surface treatments, exhibiting different kinetics processes.

Oral Tissue Interactions and Cellular Response to Zirconia Implant-Prosthetic Components: A Critical Review

Marcel F. Kunrath et al.

Summary: This critical review evaluates the applications of zirconia in dental components and its interactions with oral tissues, highlighting the importance of surface treatment methods and cell responses for clinical implications. The results suggest that surface treatments of zirconia can lead to excellent osseointegration and biological seal, providing encouraging prospects for rapid bone adhesion. Dental devices manufactured from zirconia are structurally and chemically stable with biocompatibility levels allowing for safe and long-term function in the oral environment.
