Synthesis and Application of Cobalt Oxide (Co3O4)-Impregnated Olive Stones Biochar for the Removal of Rifampicin and Tigecycline: Multivariate Controlled Performance

Ahmed S. El-Shafie et al.

Summary: Cobalt oxide nanoparticles supported on olive stone biochar were used for the efficient sorption of rifampicin and tigecycline from wastewater. The adsorbent exhibited a large surface area and high pore-volume, leading to high adsorption efficiency. The Langmuir model perfectly described the adsorption of rifampicin, while the Freundlich model was suitable for tigecycline. The pseudo-second order model best represented the adsorption kinetics of both drugs.

Removal of sulfamethoxazole and antibiotic resistance genes in paddy soil by earthworms (Pheretima guillelmi): Intestinal detoxification and stimulation of indigenous soil bacteria

Yue Zhang et al.

Summary: Vermiremediation, using earthworms to remove contaminants from soil, can enhance the degradation of sulfamethoxazole (SMX) by stimulating indigenous soil bacteria and promoting the activity of degrading bacteria in earthworm intestines. Earthworms also remove antibiotic resistance genes (ARGs) by increasing the fraction of potential SMX degraders and inhibiting the potential hosts of ARGs.

Dynamics and thermodynamics for competitive adsorptive removal of methylene blue and rhodamine B from binary aqueous solution onto durian rind

M. Ashrul Asbollah et al.

Summary: In this study, the concurrent adsorptive removal of methylene blue and rhodamine B from wastewater using durian rind agricultural waste as an adsorbent was investigated. The adsorption process followed pseudo-second-order kinetics and was best described by the Langmuir model. The adsorption efficiency of methylene blue was higher than that of rhodamine B, which can be attributed to the higher rate constant for methylene blue adsorption. The adsorption behavior suggested that the two dyes independently and randomly adsorbed onto the durian rind surface. The competitive effect in the concurrent adsorption of the two dyes was confirmed, likely due to non-interactive or repulsive electrostatic interactions between the dyes in the binary system.

Summary: Among environmental issues, organic synthetic dyes are important subjects for wastewater treatment. This study investigated the photocatalytic degradation of the dimethylmethane fluorescent dye, Auramine O, using TiO2 nanoparticles as catalyst. The results showed that the degradation kinetics followed a pseudo-first order reaction with a maximum efficiency of 96.2%. The initial concentration and catalyst dosage had an impact on the photocatalytic efficiency.

Individual and Competitive Adsorption of Negatively Charged Acid Blue 25 and Acid Red 1 onto Raw Indonesian Kaolin Clay

M. Ashrul Asbollah et al.

Summary: In this study, the adsorption of AB25 and AR1 onto raw Indonesian kaolin was investigated. The results showed that the adsorption of AB25 and AR1 followed pseudo-second-order kinetics and occurred on a homogeneous monolayer of the basal surfaces of kaolinite particles. Thermodynamic parameters indicated that the adsorption was spontaneous and exothermic. The co-adsorption of the two dyes was found to be competitive.

Pharmaceuticals Market, Consumption Trends and Disease Incidence Are Not Driving the Pharmaceutical Research on Water and Wastewater

Omar Israel Gonzalez Pena et al.

Summary: The consumption of pharmaceuticals is increasing due to the need to treat aging-related and chronic diseases, leading to historic growth in market revenues worldwide. However, the discharge of pharmaceuticals into the environment is a significant environmental concern and human health risk. Research shows that existing studies do not fully reflect the most produced and consumed pharmaceuticals on the market, indicating that other drivers are promoting pharmaceutical research outside of market trends.

Synergistic effect in concurrent removal of toxic methylene blue and acid red-1 dyes from aqueous solution by durian rind: kinetics, isotherm, thermodynamics, and mechanism

M. Ashrul Asbollah et al.

Summary: The study systematically investigated the synergistic effect between cationic methylene blue and anionic acid red 1 on their concurrent adsorptive removal from aqueous binary solution onto durian rind. The results showed that the presence of both dyes resulted in an enhanced adsorption efficiency of AR1, while the adsorption efficiency of MB remained almost unchanged. This synergistic effect was attributed to electrostatic interactions between the two ionic dyes.
