Agriculture in the Ancient Maya Lowlands (Part 1): Paleoethnobotanical Residues and New Perspectives on Plant Management

Summary: This article focuses on pre-Columbian agricultural regimes in the Maya Lowlands, examining inherited models of agriculture based on new archaeological datasets and contemporary Indigenous practices. The study reveals limitations and heterogeneity in environmental affordances and agricultural strategies, challenges the dominance of maize in agriculture, and highlights the importance of agroforestry, homegardening, horticulture, and wild resource management in addition to swidden strategies. The findings also suggest evidence of resilience and sustainable agricultural practices rather than complete crop failure.

Ancient Lowland Maya neighborhoods: Average Nearest Neighbor analysis and kernel density models, environments, and urban scale

The findings show that centers in river valleys have more household clustering compared to upland and escarpment environments. This article explores a public group in the hinterland site of San Lorenzo, Belize to understand how practices of affiliation were expressed through ritual economy from the Late Preclassic to Terminal Classic periods. Focal nodes enabled face-to-face interactions for community integration, allowing groups to negotiate and display their status within the community and larger regional polities.

Inequality, networks, and the financing of Classic Maya political power

Sulfur isotopes as a proxy for human diet and mobility from the preclassic through colonial periods in the Eastern Maya lowlands
