Mapping Potential Water Resource Areas Using GIS-Based Frequency Ratio and Evidential Belief Function

Yang Li et al.

Summary: This study integrated remote sensing, GIS-based frequency ratio (FR), and evidential belief function (EBF) techniques to delineate and quantify prospective groundwater zones. Using data from SRTM, Landsat-8 OLI, Sentinel-2, and rainfall, the study revealed the geomorphic, hydrologic, and structural elements, as well as climatic conditions of the study area in China. By processing and combining twelve factors that control groundwater infiltration and occurrence using FR and EBF models, groundwater potential zones (GWPZs) were generated. The FR-EBF model showed improved accuracy compared to individual models, increasing the areas of high and moderate potentiality in the study area.

Soil Erosion Quantification using Machine Learning in Sub-Watersheds of Northern Portugal

Saulo Folharini et al.

Summary: Protected areas are crucial in mitigating soil erosion. This study evaluated the performance of machine learning models, namely Support Vector Machine (SVM) and Random Forest (RF), in identifying indicators of soil erosion in sub-watersheds and protected areas in northern Portugal. The analysis considered various parameters, such as soil erosion data, burned area, and morphometric factors. The findings showed that morphometric factors, soil erosion data, and burned area play significant roles in analyzing soil erosion in watersheds.

Groundwater hydrogeochemical characterization and quality assessment based on integrated weight matter-element extension analysis in Ningxia, upper Yellow River, northwest China

Xiaodong Wang et al.

Summary: Assessing groundwater quality and identifying pollutant risks are essential for managing groundwater resources in arid and semi-arid regions. This study analyzed the hydrochemical characteristics, pollutant characteristics, and health risks of groundwater in the upper Yellow River region. The study used traditional analysis methods as well as integrated weight matter-element extension analysis and health risk models. The results showed that the groundwater in the study area had weak alkalinity and the predominant hydrochemical types were SO4 center dot Cl-Ca center dot Mg, SO4 center dot Cl-Na, and HCO3-Ca center dot Mg. Nitrogen pollution was caused by industrial activities and fertilizers, while fluorine pollution was caused by fluorite dissolution. The overall groundwater quality was good, but there were health risks present in some samples. Real-time monitoring and continuous assessment of pollutants are important for groundwater management and protection.
