Navigating power imbalances in landscape governance: a network and influence analysis in southern Zambia

Freddie S. Siangulube et al.

Summary: Actors in integrated landscape approaches have different powers that affect decision-making. This paper analyzes power relations in southern Zambia and finds that actors exercise visible, hidden, or invisible power to influence decision-making. Power imbalances are the result of actors' social belongingness and histories. Integrated landscape approaches can help balance power, but a power analysis is needed to recognize differentials and include marginalized actors in decision-making.

Modelling past and future land use and land cover dynamics in the Nakambe River Basin, West Africa

Gnibga Issoufou Yangouliba et al.

Summary: Understanding the dynamics of land use and cover (LULC) is crucial for sustainable development in Africa. This study analyzed the historical and future changes in LULC in the Nakambe River Basin using satellite images and modeling techniques. The findings highlight the impact of deforestation and suggest the need for improved land management policies in the region.

Monitoring spatial-temporal variations of surface areas of small reservoirs in Ghana's Upper East Region using Sentinel-2 satellite imagery and machine learning

Benjamin Ghansah et al.

Summary: This study classified and analyzed the spatial-temporal variations of small reservoirs in the Upper East Region of Ghana using remote sensing and machine learning algorithms. The results showed that landscape positions have a significant impact on the size and water availability of small reservoirs. The study also revealed that these small reservoirs retain substantial amounts of water even at the end of the dry season, which can be utilized for irrigation purposes.

Analysing land use/land cover changes and its dynamics using remote sensing and GIS in Gubalafito district, Northeastern Ethiopia

Gebeyehu Abebe et al.

Summary: This study used remote sensing and GIS techniques to analyze the changes in land use/land cover in the Gubalafto district of Northeastern Ethiopia over the past 30 years, and identified the main drivers of these changes. The results showed that cultivated and settlement areas were the most extensive land use type in the study area, increasing by 9% over the period. It also revealed a significant expansion of bush land and bare land areas, while grazing land and forest cover, which are environmentally important, decreased.

A place at the table is not enough: Accountability for Indigenous Peoples and local communities in multi-stakeholder platforms

Anne M. Larson et al.

Summary: Efforts to address global problems of land and resource use require multi-stakeholder collaboration. There is also a growing interest in including marginalized groups in decision-making, such as Indigenous Peoples, local communities, smallholders, and women. However, achieving equity in multi-stakeholder platforms and forums is challenging. This article presents a comparative study of 11 subnational multi-stakeholder platforms and forums in Brazil, Ethiopia, Indonesia, and Peru, analyzing the perspectives of Indigenous Peoples and local community participants on equity and the potential of these platforms. The findings suggest the need for greater attention to how marginalized groups perceive their participation in order to promote equality and accountability.

A survey on trade in wildlife parts in the Northern Region of Ghana

George Dery et al.

Summary: The faunal diversity of Ghana is under serious threat due to overexploitation of wildlife species. A study on trade in wildlife parts in the Northern region of Ghana revealed that middlemen were the main sources of wildlife supplies for traders. Endangered animal parts were found on display in the market, and wildlife species known for spreading zoonotic diseases were also present. The majority of respondents were aware of wildlife laws.

Identification of the trade-offs/synergies between rural landscape services in a spatially explicit way for sustainable rural development

Jiayi Wang et al.

Summary: This study proposed a rural landscape services system, assessed the landscape services capabilities at village scale, and found trade-offs and synergies along urban-rural and terrain gradients. The majority of villages showed trade-offs in landscape services, while synergies were largely observed in the middle and eastern regions of the study area.

Trade-off decisions in ecosystem management for poverty alleviation

Marije Schaafsma et al.

Summary: The academic literature on trade-offs in ecosystem management lacks focus on justice and poverty reduction objectives. This paper aims to highlight the multidimensional nature of trade-offs in ecosystem services management for poverty alleviation and proposes the Balance Sheets Approach for decision-making. Case studies illustrate the necessity of combining 'positive' and 'value' approaches to analyze complex trade-offs in low-income settings.

Toward Inclusive Landscape Governance in Contested Landscapes: Exploring the Contribution of Participatory Tools in the Upper Suriname River Basin

Lisa Best et al.

Summary: This study examines the contribution of three participatory geo-information tools to inclusive landscape governance in the Upper Suriname River Basin in Suriname, including Participatory 3-Dimensional Modelling, the Trade-off! game, and participatory scenario planning. The integrated application of these tools helps integrate diverse interests, legitimize the voices and knowledge of indigenous and tribal communities, and build consensus among landscape actors. The results highlight the importance of systematically considering tool attributes and key factors for optimal use in local contexts, as well as the benefits of combining multiple tools to address inclusive landscape governance issues.

Using Participatory Spatial Tools to Unravel Community Perceptions of Land-Use Dynamics in a Mine-Expanding Landscape in Ghana

Jane J. Aggrey et al.

Summary: Artisanal and small-scale mining in sub-Saharan Africa have significant impacts on rural landscapes, with this study focusing on a mixed farming-mining community in Ghana's Eastern Region. The participatory mapping analysis reveals how the community perceives the spatial dynamics of ASM and its effects on land use for farming and food production, pointing towards a trend of food-crop areas transforming into mining land, leading to further landscape segregation in the future. The study emphasizes the importance of responsible application of participatory mapping in raising awareness and promoting inclusive landscape governance in areas affected by ASM.

Capable to govern landscape restoration? Exploring landscape governance capabilities, based on literature and stakeholder perceptions

Cora van Oosten et al.

Summary: Landscape governance is increasingly being recognized as a promising approach for restoring forested landscapes and achieving ecological, economic, and social objectives simultaneously. The governance of landscape restoration involves multi-stakeholder dialogue and negotiation on different restoration types and forms, with a focus on necessary trade-offs. Despite a growing body of literature on landscape restoration challenges, there is a lack of literature on the role of landscape governance in overcoming these challenges.

Envisioning the Future of Mosaic Landscapes: Actor Perceptions in a Mixed Cocoa/Oil-Palm Area in Ghana

Kwabena O. Asubonteng et al.

Summary: This study introduces a participatory spatial scenario-building methodology to uncover local perceptions of landscape dynamics and actions needed. Findings reveal that farmers and institutional actors are aware of their landscapes, with only those in oil-palm-dominated areas desiring a mosaic landscape. The methodology aims to increase farmers' negotiation power through active engagement and visualization of their knowledge and visions.
