Supporting sustainability projects at neighbourhood scale: Green visions for the San Salvario district in Turin guided by a combined assessment framework

Federico Dell'Anna et al.

Summary: A resilient city requires multiple energy carriers, efficient infrastructure, and reduced resource demand to align with international agreements and recovery plans. This paper proposes a multi-step evaluation procedure that considers economic and non-economic criteria and stakeholder opinions to assess sustainable measures in urban design.

Greening cities through urban planning: A literature review on the uptake of concepts and methods in Stockholm

Blal Adem Esmail et al.

Summary: This paper analyzes the adoption of greening concepts in the scientific planning literature in the metropolitan region of Stockholm, Sweden, over the past three decades. The study finds an increasing interest in biodiversity, ecosystem services, and nature-based solutions. The most commonly addressed societal challenges include population growth/densification, green space management, and biodiversity conservation. Quantitative methods are predominantly used, with some qualitative approaches in ecosystem services studies. Overall, the influence of scientific literature on the uptake of greening concepts in spatial planning appears to be limited, highlighting the need for more active translation and boundary management in advancing sustainable pathways for people and nature in metropolitan regions.

Challenges in the Implementation of the 2030 Agenda at the Local Scale. The Case Study of the Municipal Masterplan of Cagliari

Maddalena Floris et al.

Summary: This paper proposes a new methodology to advance the Sustainable Development Goals at the local level, by defining a hierarchical relationship between actions and objectives using a logical framework structure. The methodology includes a monitoring system with indicators to assess impacts and provide alternatives if necessary. It is applicable in other Italian regional contexts and serves as a reference framework for integrating the Regional Strategy for Sustainable Development into territorial planning processes.

An Advanced Open Land Use Database as a Resource to Address Destination Earth Challenges

Michal Kepka et al.

Summary: The goal of this study was to design a new version of the Open Land Use (OLU) database that would better fit the user requirements collected by LULC data projects. The key achievements of this study include a formal definition of the data model using Unified Modeling Language (UML) class diagrams, a feature catalogue based on ISO 19110, and SQL scripts for setting up the OLU database. The research also provides a multi-scale open database of LULC information and supports the DestinE initiative to develop a high-precision digital model of the earth with modular views of the OLU database.

A Spatial Ecosystem Services Assessment to Support Decision and Policy Making: The Case of the City of Bologna

Francesca Vignoli et al.

Summary: Urban Ecosystem Services (ESs) mapping and assessment for urban planning has been a topic of debate, with this study developing a method to evaluate supply and demand, identify intervention areas, and classify city districts based on land use. Testing in Bologna, the study tailored three ESs, processed data in GIS for visualization, and proposed nature-based solutions for intervention priority areas. This method can assist other urban areas in quickly assessing ESs needs and challenges.

From Comparative and Statistical Assessments of Liveability and Health Conditions of Districts in Hong Kong towards Future City Development

Yan Ling Chi et al.

Summary: Liveability is essential for future city planning and is closely linked with individual and community health. This study established the Liveability and Health Index (LHI-HK) with 30 indicators in Hong Kong, finding correlations between liveability and health, with Sai Kung and Kwun Tong identified as the most and least liveable districts in 2019. The LHI-HK index was validated by renowned indices, indicating its relevance and applicability for similar assessments in international cities, while also identifying favorable and unfavorable spatial arrangements within different district types in Hong Kong.
