Reconciling ecological footprint and ecosystem services in natural capital accounting: Applying a novel framework to the Silk Road Economic Belt in China

Ruqian Zhang et al.

Summary: Natural capital is a limiting factor for sustainable development goals. There are various methods for natural capital accounting, but they often lack consistency in accounting items and fail to represent both physical and monetary quantities. This study integrates the ecological footprint and ecosystem service methods, introducing equivalence factors to create a standardized and flexible natural capital accounting framework. By analyzing the provinces along China's Silk Road Economic Belt from 2000 to 2020, the study reveals that natural capital supply cannot meet consumer demands, resulting in expanding ecological deficits. The sustainability of natural capital in this region is weakening, and ecological pressure is increasing. These findings provide insights for the scientific utilization and management of natural capital and enrich the research achievements of ecological footprint and ecosystem service theories.
