Lake sturgeon seasonal movements in regulated and unregulated Missouri River tributaries

Michael J. Moore et al.

Summary: Spatio-temporal movement patterns of aquatic organisms are influenced by dam-induced alterations in hydrology and thermal regimes. Lake Sturgeon studied in regulated tributaries exhibited greater year-round residency, later initiation, more frequent directional changes, and longer duration of spring migrations compared to those in unregulated tributaries. Dams may play a significant role in influencing the timing, duration, and extent of seasonal migrations of Lake Sturgeon, providing important insights for habitat and hydrology management to recover migratory fishes globally.

Detection range of two acoustic transmitters in four reservoir habitat types using passive receivers

Mark Fincel et al.

Summary: The South Dakota Department of Game, Fish, and Parks (SDGFP) has conducted a series of rigorous acoustic telemetry studies to evaluate the detection probability of receivers in different habitats of Lake Sharpe. The study found that areas protected from wind and wave action had larger detection ranges compared to areas with more exposure to wind and boat traffic. There was also a higher detection probability at nighttime compared to daytime. Based on these findings, SDGFP modified their receiver array to enhance the detection ability in the novel habitats of Lake Sharpe.

Influence of dense macrophyte vegetation and total gas saturation on the performance of acoustic telemetry

Kirstine Thiemer et al.

Summary: This study investigated the impact of macrophytes and total gas saturation on the detection probability and range of acoustic transmitters. The results showed that both the density and distance of macrophytes significantly reduced the detection probability and range. Increasing total gas saturation also decreased the detection probability. These findings highlight the importance of in situ range testing before conducting acoustic telemetry studies in shallow ecosystems.

Detection range and efficiency of acoustic telemetry receivers in a connected wetland system

Emily R. Winter et al.

Summary: Studies have shown that water temperature and precipitation are the most influential factors in stationary tag data, while transparency is a strong predictor of detection range and dependent on chlorophyll concentration (a surrogate measure of algal density). These results highlight the value of stationary tag data in assessments of acoustic receiver performance. The high seasonal variability in detection efficiency and detection range emphasizes the need for long-term receiver monitoring to enable robust conclusions to be drawn from telemetry data.

Lake sturgeon (Acipenser fulvescens) annual adult survival estimated from acoustic telemetry

S. F. Colborne et al.

Summary: The study used acoustic telemetry to track lake sturgeon for seven years and found high annual survival rates that were unrelated to sex, size, tagging location, or year post-tagging. High detection probability on acoustic receivers and the consistent survival rates indicated self-sustainability of lake sturgeon in the St. Clair - Detroit river system. Application of acoustic telemetry data to CJS models demonstrated its usefulness for population assessment studies in the Great Lakes and beyond.
