Global scientific collaboration: A social network analysis and data mining of the co-authorship networks

Global science and national comparisons: beyond bibliometrics and scientometrics

Summary: Over the past three decades, a networked global system based in natural science disciplines has emerged, sustained by collegial epistemic relations in universities. Alongside the global science system, nationally ordered and funded science has also expanded. Despite the common global pool of papers, which excludes a large amount of knowledge, four main tendencies are apparent: rapid growth of papers, diversification of scientific capacity across many countries, expansion of networked international and national collaboration measured by co-authorship, and a growing multi-polarity of capacity, outputs, and quality with the rise of China and other middle-sized national systems. The paper critiques the dominant interpretation of global science in scientometrics and advocates for a historical-synthetic explanation of the global system that considers both data and theoretical frameworks, as well as power dynamics.
