Social Isolation and Incident Dementia in the Oldest-Old-A Competing Risk Analysis

Jessica Grothe et al.

Summary: Contrary to previous findings, there was no association between social isolation and incident dementia in the oldest-old population. However, this analysis accounted for the competing risk of death and had a rather short follow-up period. Future studies, especially those with longer follow-up periods and more comprehensive assessment of qualitative social network characteristics, may provide further clarification.

Loneliness in Europe before and during the COVID-19 pandemic

Julia Baarck et al.

Summary: This study aims to examine the prevalence of loneliness in Europe in 2016 and during the initial months (April-July 2020) of the COVID-19 pandemic, and to determine if the risk factors associated with loneliness have changed after the outbreak of the pandemic. The results indicate that the COVID-19 pandemic has intensified the already concerning levels of loneliness in Europe, particularly impacting young adults. Living alone, health status, and financial status are strongly associated with loneliness, regardless of the time period.

Employment and retirement impacts on health and wellbeing among a sample of rural Australians

Tonelle E. Handley et al.

Summary: The study found that individuals who were employed or retired generally reported better health and wellbeing compared to those not in the workforce. Retired participants rated higher in mental health, relationships, and satisfaction with life. However, there was a short-term benefit in perceived financial status for retired participants, but this effect diminished over time.

Correlates of Social Isolation Among Community-Dwelling Older Adults During the COVID-19 Pandemic

Omolola E. Adepoju et al.

Summary: This study found that factors such as female sex, higher education, and having insurance were positively associated with social isolation among older adults, while unmet caregiving needs and the presence of chronic conditions were strong predictors. Results also showed differing patterns of correlates for social isolation among Hispanic and African American older adults, emphasizing the need for culturally sensitive initiatives to address social isolation in vulnerable populations.

Ana Branez-Condorena et al.

Summary: This study found that various versions of GDS-4 and GDS-5 showed significant heterogeneity in estimates of sensitivity and specificity for depression screening in older adults, with most evidence having low or very low certainty. More well-designed studies comparing different GDS versions are needed.

Aging and social isolation: an integrative review

Patricia Araujo Bezerra et al.

Summary: The concept of social isolation in older people is associated with inadequate social relationships, distinct from loneliness; standardization of the concept is necessary for better measurement accuracy; interventions are available, but there is insufficient evidence-based information.
