Orchestration of Collective Migration and Metastasis by Tumor Cell Clusters

Ami Yamamoto et al.

Summary: Metastatic dissemination has lethal consequences for cancer patients, and evidence suggests that tumor cells can migrate and metastasize as clusters of cells while maintaining contacts with one another. Collective metastasis allows tumor cells to colonize secondary sites efficiently, resist cell death, and evade the immune system. This article reviews recent progress in understanding how tumor cell clusters overcome disadvantages in dissemination and gain advantages in the metastatic process, and explores the potential for eradicating and preventing metastatic disease through the study of collective metastasis.

Quantitative Analysis of Collective Migration by Single-Cell Tracking Aimed at Understanding Cancer Metastasis

Zhuohan Xin et al.

Summary: Metastasis is a common complication of cancer treatment and understanding cell migration is crucial for controlling it. In collective migration, there are leader cells and follower cells, but their interactions are not well understood. The study found that a small number of highly migratory cells can enhance the migration properties of other cells.
