Summary: The increasing use of synthetic nicotine in marketed products and its uncertain regulatory status have raised concerns. Efforts to develop more efficient methods for the synthesis of nicotine have been seen in recent years. Differentiation of synthetic and tobacco-derived nicotine may require the development of methods to measure carbon isotope content. Vendors argue that FDA has no authority to regulate synthetic nicotine as a tobacco product, but legal analysis suggests that FDA may have the authority to regulate synthetic nicotine as a drug.

Young adults with more frequent e-cigarette use and use of nicotine pouches are more likely to report TFN e-cigarette use.

Summary: There is a need to differentiate analytically between tobacco-derived nicotine and synthetic nicotine in commercial products. Currently, only tobacco-derived nicotine products are regulated, while synthetic nicotine products are not. Carbon-14 analysis is an effective method to accurately distinguish between the two nicotine sources.

Summary: The study found that there is confusion among young adults about the source of nicotine in products, and many incorrectly interpreted TFN to mean something other than containing nicotine but no tobacco. Regulatory efforts may be necessary to restrict the use of the term "tobacco-free nicotine" on product labeling and advertising.

Summary: The study found that e-liquid products sold online are priced low, with an average price of $0.25/mL, lower compared with price estimates using other sources. In addition, online stores charge state excise taxes inconsistently and fail to comply with county-level or city-level excise taxes.

Summary: This study investigated the perceptions of young adults towards tobacco free nicotine (TFN) compared to tobacco-derived nicotine (TDN). The findings showed that young adults who were curious to try or had used TFN had more positive perceptions regarding TFN's addictiveness, flavor, taste, and similarity to tobacco.
