A Methodological Tool to Assess Erosion Susceptibility of High Coastal Sectors: Case Studies from Campania Region (Southern Italy)

Maria Francesca Tursi et al.

Summary: This paper proposes a new method for assessing the susceptibility of high coastal sectors to erosive processes. The method combines two matrices to consider the physical characteristics and forcing agents affecting the sectors. The approach was applied to two locations in southern Italy and the results showed a high susceptibility to erosion, indicating the need for increased monitoring and protective actions.

Bathymetry from satellite images: a proposal for adapting the band ratio approach to IKONOS data

Francesco Giuseppe Figliomeni et al.

Summary: Acquiring bathymetric data in shallower waters using traditional survey methods is difficult due to the inaccessibility of hydrographic vessels. Satellite detection of depth data (SDB) provides a useful and economically advantageous alternative. This article investigates the band ratio method (BRM) applied to high geometric resolution satellite images and proposes nonlinear functions to improve the accuracy of the SDB.

Present-day infralittoral prograding wedges (IPWs) in Central-Eastern Tyrrhenian Sea: Critical issues and challenges to their use as geomorphological indicators of sea level

F. Budillon et al.

Summary: A census was conducted in the Central-Eastern Tyrrhenian Sea to analyze the morpho-bathymetric variability of 83 Infralittoral Prograding Wedges (IPWs). The study aimed to determine the reliability of IPWs as indicators of current and past sea levels by analyzing various environmental and morphometric variables. The results showed a significant correlation between IPWs depth and factors such as storm waves and backshore relief. Additionally, the study proposed a simplified equation to estimate the original depth of paleo-IPWs.

Coastal vs volcanic processes: Procida Island as a case of complex morpho-evolutive response

Pietro P. C. Aucelli et al.

Summary: This study presents a comprehensive geomorphological analysis of the coastal area of Procida Island, Italy, revealing the main coastal changes that occurred during the Holocene. Through various survey methods and the integration of data from remote sensing interpretation, morphological, archaeological, and geological markers, the location and approximate age of paleo-shore platforms were determined. The study found that volcano-tectonic subsidence exacerbated the retreat of sea cliffs and contributed to the multi-cyclic formation of coastal landforms.

Summary: This study focuses on the most complex volcano-tectonic sector in the Mediterranean basin, analyzing the vertical ground movements and sea-level evolution in the past millennia. By using sea-level data and geophysical predictions, the study aims to determine the combined effects of future sea-level rise and ground movements on vulnerable coastal areas.

Assessment of Atmospheric Correction Processors and Spectral Bands for Satellite-Derived Bathymetry Using Sentinel-2 Data in the Middle Adriatic

Ljerka Vrdoljak et al.

Summary: This study evaluated different image-based atmospheric correction processors for SDB modeling, namely: Sen2Cor, Acolite, C2RCC, and iCOR. The empirical log band ratio algorithm was applied to a time series of Sentinel-2 MSI in the middle Adriatic. All AC processors outperformed Sentinel-L2A MSI for SDB. Acolite and iCOR demonstrated accurate performance with a correlation coefficient higher than 90 percent and the RMSE under 2 m for depths up to 20 m.

Geomorphometric analysis of the natural and anthropogenic seascape of Naples (Italy): A high-resolution morpho-bathymetric survey

Claudia Caporizzo et al.

Summary: This research aims to reconstruct submerged morphologies of high-coast sectors of Naples by analysing high-resolution data of a multibeam survey in a GIS environment. It distinguishes between natural landforms and anthropogenic structures, identifying erosional traces of Holocene sea cliff retreat and mapping underwater archaeological remains of Roman Age.

Alessandra Savini et al.

Summary: Climate change and tectonic uplift are the main driving forces behind the formation of long and narrow terraced landforms, with both emerged and submerged terraces being significant geomorphological indicators. Integrating various datasets can lead to a better understanding of the tectono-geomorphological evolution.

Multi-proxy analysis of relative sea-level and paleoshoreline changes during the last 2300 years in the Campi Flegrei caldera, Southern Italy

Pietro P. C. Aucelli et al.

Summary: This study focuses on the relative sea-level changes and vertical ground movements in Campi Flegrei caldera since the Early Roman period, analyzing the coastal landscape adaptations. By comparing RSL measurements with eustatic models, the VGM history of the coastal sector in the last 2300 years was reconstructed, revealing a trend of overall subsiding and prevailing uplift. The coastal changes, including retreat and submersion of structures, were found to be significant and influenced by ancient sea levels.
