Hair in the BBC's The Hollow Crown: The Wars of the Roses: Class, Nation, Gender, Race, and Difference

Eleanor Rycroft

Summary: This article examines how The Hollow Crown: The Wars of the Roses establishes a norm of white masculinity at the core of its representation of political power, and uses deviations from this norm to delineate other groups. It focuses on the intersection of production choices and underlying misogyny in the plays, particularly in how hair and costume are used to manifest otherness in performance. Ultimately, the production choices are argued to be gatekeeping processes in determining British identity in both a medieval past and contemporary Shakespearean performance.
