The predictability of expansion with Invisalign: A retrospective cohort study

Richard Tien et al.

Summary: This study assessed the predictability of expansion with Invisalign. The results showed that on average, the Invisalign system did not achieve the predicted expansion, and the amount of expansion varied according to tooth type and arch. Careful overcorrection is required to compensate for expansion inaccuracy.

The predictability of the mandibular curve of Wilson, buccolingual crown inclination, and transverse expansion expression with Invisalign treatment

Shaun Goh et al.

Summary: This study aimed to investigate the mandibular curve of Wilson (COW) handling using the Invisalign appliance. The study also assessed the buccolingual crown inclinations and transverse expansions to identify any ineffective regions in the dental arch. Results showed that the Invisalign appliance tends to over-flatten the mandibular COW, and only the mandibular second molars experienced more expansion than predicted by ClinCheck.

Evaluation of the predicted vs. achieved occlusal outcomes with the Invisalign® appliance: A retrospective investigation of adult patients

Emma Bowman et al.

Summary: This study aimed to explore the relationship between occlusal contacts, overbite, buccolingual inclination, and transverse expansion in mild-to-moderate Class I malocclusions treated with Invisalign (R) appliance. The results showed an overall loss of posterior contact and deficiencies in achieved buccolingual inclination and transverse expansion, indicating that planned bodily expansion was ineffective.

Biomechanics of clear aligners: hidden truths & first principles

Madhur Upadhyay et al.

Summary: Clear aligner-based treatment has gained attention from orthodontic professionals and general practitioners, but the accuracy of tooth movement with aligners is still relatively low. This paper discusses the drawbacks of aligner-based therapy, particularly the biomechanical properties of aligner material, and provides clinical insights for improving the effectiveness of aligner therapy.

Micro computed tomography evaluation of Invisalign aligner thickness homogeneity

Edoardo Mantovani et al.

Summary: The study measured the thickness homogeneity of Invisalign aligners using micro-CT scans and found differences in thickness among different regions, with significant variations in the molar region. This discovery may help explain the reduced predictability of several orthodontic tooth movements in the molar region.

Effect of clear aligner wear protocol on the efficacy of tooth movement: A randomized clinical trial

Mays Al-Nadawi et al.

Summary: Studies comparing the efficacy of orthodontic tooth movement with different aligner wear protocols found that a 14-day change showed greater accuracy in some posterior movements. However, the difference in accuracy between the 7-day and 14-day protocols did not exceed the threshold for clinical significance.

A cone-beam computed tomographic study evaluating the efficacy of incisor movement with clear aligners: Assessment of incisor pure tipping, controlled tipping, translation, and torque

Ting Jiang et al.

Summary: The efficacy of incisor movement in the sagittal plane using clear aligners varies with designed movement type, with labial root movement appearing to be more accurate than lingual root movement. Pure tipping was the most predictable movement, while torque movement was the least predictable.

Predictability of overbite control with the Invisalign appliance

Haylea L. Blundell et al.

Summary: The study found that ClinCheck software over-predicted overbite reduction in Invisalign treatment for deep overbites. The deeper the initial overbite, the larger the predicted reduction by ClinCheck, yet the actual posttreatment outcomes showed significant discrepancies.

Micro-computed tomography evaluation of general trends in aligner thickness and gap width after thermoforming procedures involving six commercial clear aligners: An in vitro study

Mario Palone et al.

Summary: The study showed that thermoforming affects the thickness and gap width of aligners, with different tooth types, regions, and aligner types influencing the results. In thermoformed samples, the thickness and gap width at anterior teeth and central positions were smaller than those at posterior teeth and occlusal surfaces.
