IDF Diabetes Atlas: Global, regional and country-level diabetes prevalence estimates for 2021 and projections for 2045

Hong Sun et al.

Summary: This study provides global, regional, and country-level estimates of diabetes prevalence and health expenditures for 2021 and projections for 2045. The global prevalence of diabetes is increasing and is expected to have the greatest relative increase in middle-income countries. Diabetes-related health expenditures are also projected to rise.

Small Dense LDL: Scientific Background, Clinical Relevance, and Recent Evidence Still a Risk Even with 'Normal' LDL-C Levels

Harold Superko et al.

Summary: Despite statin use and LDL-C reduction, residual cardiovascular disease event risk remains. Abnormal lipoprotein size and density distribution, known as lipoprotein heterogeneity, contributes to this residual risk. Recent clinical trial evidence reinforces the importance of LDL heterogeneity measurement and its impact on CHD risk prediction and outcomes.

Bilirubin as a metabolic hormone: the physiological relevance of low levels

Justin F. Creeden et al.

Summary: Recent research indicates that bilirubin may have a new role as a metabolic hormone, potentially leading to cardiovascular complications for patients with low levels. Protective mechanisms at mildly elevated levels of bilirubin could offer treatment possibilities for those with hypobilirubinemia.

Associations between serum total bilirubin, obesity and type 2 diabetes

Yuan Wei et al.

Summary: The study found that individuals with lower serum total bilirubin levels had a significantly higher risk of type 2 diabetes compared to those with moderate or high levels. Additionally, it was discovered that body mass index (BMI) may moderate the association between bilirubin and type 2 diabetes, with a stronger effect observed in obese individuals. This study suggests that serum total bilirubin is associated with an increased risk of type 2 diabetes and that this association may be influenced by obesity.

Bilirubin as a Therapeutic Molecule: Challenges and Opportunities

Christopher A. Adin

Summary: Serum free bilirubin concentration has significant effects on morbidity and mortality in major health conditions such as cardiovascular disease, diabetes, and obesity/metabolic syndrome. Challenges in using bilirubin as a therapeutic agent in human patients include poor solubility, complex molecular structure, and concerns about animal-derived sources. However, advancements in drug delivery, biosynthetic strategies, and drug synthesis offer new possibilities for applying bilirubin as a pharmaceutical agent.

Small dense low-density lipoprotein: Analytical review

Christina Kanonidou

Summary: Various methods exist for the analysis of LDL subfractions and the measurement of sdLDL particle characteristics, with ultracentrifugation, gradient gel electrophoresis, NMR spectroscopy, and homogeneous assay being common. While there is no gold standard, ultracentrifugation and GGE are established techniques, while NMR and homogeneous assay are rapid and high-throughput options. However, none of the proposed equations for calculated sdLDL determination have been sufficiently validated for clinical use.

Summary: Subjects with Gilbert's syndrome show higher levels of antioxidant potential and protein oxidation products, as well as lower levels of apolipoprotein B, hs-C-reactive protein, interleukin 6, and interleukin 1 beta compared to healthy controls. Resting heart rate is also significantly lower in the GS group. Older subjects with GS demonstrate stronger protective effects.

Summary: Diabetic dyslipidaemia plays a crucial role in the interaction between diabetes and atherosclerotic cardiovascular disease, involving both quantitative and qualitative abnormalities in lipoproteins, with established pathophysiology. Recognizing and managing diabetic dyslipidaemia can reduce cardiovascular risk in patients.
