Development of a Finite Element Model of the Pediatric Thoracic and Lumbar Spine, Ribcage, and Pelvis With Orthotropic Region-Specific Vertebral Growth

Sriram Balasubramanian et al.

Summary: Finite element modeling of the spine is becoming increasingly important in orthopedic precision medicine. The development of pediatric spine growth FE models can provide valuable clinical insights and contribute to the development and optimization of clinical interventions for spine deformities.

Predicting curve progression for adolescent idiopathic scoliosis using random forest model

Ausilah Alfraihat et al.

Summary: This study aimed to determine the most influential prognostic factors for curve progression in adolescent idiopathic scoliosis (AIS) and develop a machine learning model to predict the final major Cobb angle. The results showed that the initial major Cobb angle, flexibility, initial lumbar lordosis angle, initial thoracic kyphosis angle, age at last visit, number of levels involved, and Risser + stage at first visit were the most important factors for predicting curve progression.

Quantifying lung and diaphragm morphology using radiographs in normative pediatric subjects, and predicting CT-derived lung volume

Mattan R. Orbach et al.

Summary: The study demonstrates the significant impact of age on 2D radiographic lung and diaphragm morphology, with 2D lung measurements being able to estimate CT-derived lung volumes. These findings provide clinically useful reference data for identifying lung and diaphragm pathologies during chest X-ray evaluations. Additionally, the radiographic method for estimating CT-derived lung volumes is simple, precise, and can be clinically adaptable when pulmonary function tests are unavailable or difficult to perform.

Morphology and growth of the pediatric lumbar vertebrae

James R. Peters et al.

Summary: This study is the first to report growth rates for most pediatric lumbar vertebral structures and the first to describe the 3D age-dependent shapes of the pediatric lumbar spine and vertebrae. In addition to providing a quantitative database, the dimension, growth, and shape data reported here would have applications in medical device design, surgical planning, surgical training, and biomechanical modeling.

The relationship between thoracic kyphosis and age, and normative values across age groups: a systematic review of healthy adults

Mattia Zappala et al.

Summary: The study revealed a positive moderate correlation between thoracic kyphosis and age, with significant differences between different age groups. People often have kyphosis exceeding 40 degrees, and ethnicity seems to influence thoracic kyphosis, while gender differences are minimal.
