Production, Types, and Applications of Activated Carbon Derived from Waste Tyres: An Overview

Nitin Muttil et al.

Summary: The storage of waste tyres poses significant environmental and health risks, especially when they are left untreated in stockpiles and landfills. By subjecting waste tyres to pyrolysis and activation, activated carbon can be produced and utilized for various applications, such as wastewater treatment, metal and dye removal, energy storage devices, and electrode materials. The use of waste tyres for activated carbon production is a sustainable alternative to conventional sources, supporting the concept of a circular economy.

Performance evaluation of waste tyre-activated carbon as a hybrid supercapacitor electrode

Eugene Sefa Appiah et al.

Summary: The increase in world population has led to a rise in vehicle production and subsequently an increase in waste tires. Recycling waste tires into valuable materials is crucial for promoting an ecofriendly society and achieving sustainable development goals. Researchers have recently focused on developing supercapacitor electrode materials from waste tires. This study investigates the effects of KOH activation and iron oxide doping on the properties of raw waste tire-derived carbon.

High efficiency removal of heavy metals using tire-derived activated carbon vs commercial activated carbon: Insights into the adsorption mechanisms

Rahim Shahrokhi-Shahraki et al.

Summary: Activated carbon derived from waste tires exhibited higher adsorption capacities for heavy metal ions than commercial activated carbon, with electrostatic attraction and surface complexation being the dominant mechanisms. In contrast, commercial activated carbon primarily relied on ion exchange for heavy metal removal.
