Review of research on migration, distribution, biological effects, and analytical methods of microfibers in the environment

Yifei Li et al.

Summary: Microplastics, particularly microfibers, have become a critical environmental pollution issue attracting attention from various countries. This research systematically reviews the contamination of microfibers through bibliometric analysis. It analyzes the primary sources and influencing factors of microfibers, summarizes the impact of fiber preparation and care processes on microfiber formation, discusses their migration in different environments, and explores their effects on ecosystems. Additionally, current and foreseeable effective treatment, disposal, and resource utilization methods for microfibers are explained.

Microplastics in Fish and Fishery Products and Risks for Human Health: A Review

Leonardo Alberghini et al.

Summary: In recent years, plastic waste has become a significant environmental problem worldwide. The main route of human exposure to microplastics is through the ingestion of contaminated food and water. Fishery products are a major source of microplastics in the human diet. Once ingested, microplastics can cause oxidative stress, cytotoxicity, and translocation to other tissues. They can also release chemical substances and act as carriers of microorganisms. However, more studies on the toxicokinetics and toxicity of microplastics in humans are needed to accurately assess the risks to human health.

Ubiquitous vertical distribution of microfibers within the upper epipelagic layer of the western Mediterranean Sea

Beatriz Rios-Fuster et al.

Summary: Abundant microplastics, primarily microfibers, are present in the epipelagic layer of the Spanish Mediterranean continental shelf. These microplastics exhibit a heterogeneous vertical and horizontal distribution. The majority of the microplastics are composed of low-density polyethylene and polypropylene, and higher abundances are found at intermediate distances from the coast.

Microplastics: A review of analytical methods, occurrence and characteristics in food, and potential toxicities to biota

Cui-Lan Bai et al.

Summary: Microplastics are commonly found in various foods, with researchers mainly digesting samples using chemical solutions and using analytical techniques such as FT-IR and Raman spectroscopy for identification. The abundance of MPs varies significantly in different types of food, potentially causing toxic effects on cells or biota.

A versatile approach to evaluate the occurrence of microfibers in mussels Mytilus galloprovincialis

Michela Volgare et al.

Summary: This study found microfibers in farmed mussels and proposed a method to distinguish natural and synthetic microfibers. It also revealed that smaller mussels contained more microfibers. These findings contribute to the assessment of the risk that microfibers may pose to marine biota and human health.

A Biomarker Approach as Responses of Bioindicator Commercial Fish Species to Microplastic Ingestion: Assessing Tissue and Biochemical Relationships

Xavier Capo et al.

Summary: This study evaluated microplastic (MP) ingestion and antioxidant responses in three fish species in the Mediterranean Sea. The results showed that the intake of MPs varied among species, with different levels of antioxidant activation. Plastic debris is a global environmental problem, and understanding its impact on marine organisms is of great significance.

Microplastics in fish and fishmeal: an emerging environmental challenge?

Christina J. Thiele et al.

Summary: Microplastics are emerging contaminants that are ingested by marine biota. Studies have shown that whitefish fishmeal samples contain a high number of microplastic particles, with processed fishmeal having higher concentrations than captured fish.

Microfibers from synthetic textiles as a major source of microplastics in the environment: A review

Sanjit Acharya et al.

Summary: Microplastic fibers, primarily originating from synthetic textile garments during home laundering, are the most common form of microplastics in the environment. Studies indicate a significant release of microfibers during laundering, but the lack of standardized research protocols makes it challenging to establish definitive trends and comparisons among studies.

Occurrence of potential plastic microfibers in mussels and anchovies sold for human consumption: Preliminary results

Serena Santonicola et al.

Summary: The preliminary study found potential microplastic microfiber contamination in mussels and anchovies sold for human consumption, with plastic and natural microfibers detected in 73% of the samples. The average number of microfibers in mussels and anchovies were 1.33 fibers/g and 9.06 fibers/individual, respectively. This contamination may pose a risk to human food safety and health, requiring further research to assess fully.

Microplastics in Tissues (Brain, Gill, Muscle and Gastrointestinal) of Mullus barbatus and Alosa immaculata

Muhammed Atamanalp et al.

Summary: The study investigated the presence and characteristics of microplastics in different tissues of commercial fish from the Black Sea. It was found that microplastic abundance was high in all tissues regardless of fish species, with the gastrointestinal tract showing the highest contamination levels. The study recommended two fish species, red mullet and pontic shad, as suitable for monitoring microplastics in the study area.
