Extraordinary eyes reveal hidden diversity within the holopelagic genus Paraphronima (Amphipoda: Hyperiidea)

Vanessa Stenvers et al.

Summary: Holopelagic animals were previously believed to have wide geographic distributions in the open ocean, but recent research has revealed higher diversity than previously thought. By combining morphological and genetic analyses, a third species of hyperiid amphipods within the genus Paraphronima was described, demonstrating substantial genetic variation and regional-scale biogeography. The study recommends further investigation of supposedly cosmopolitan holopelagic amphipods and the inclusion of eye morphology in future taxonomic studies.
