A short focus, azithromycin in the treatment of respiratory viral infection COVID-19: efficacy or inefficacy?

Antonio Vitiello et al.

Summary: Azithromycin may have some benefits for viral respiratory tract infections like COVID-19, but its antiviral efficacy is uncertain based on clinical data. Additionally, there are risks of causing arrhythmias with Azithromycin.

Pandemic COVID-19, an update of current status and new therapeutic strategies

Antonio Vitiello et al.

Summary: The global COVID-19 pandemic continues to spread, with a rapid increase in infections in countries, particularly in Europe, likely due to the new Omicron variant of SARS-CoV-2. Mass vaccination efforts are ongoing worldwide. Oral antiviral drugs such as molnupiravir and paxlovid have shown promising results in clinical trials, but their impact on the pandemic and their advantages over other antivirals like remdesivir need further investigation.

Nirmatrelvir-remdesivir association for non-hospitalized adults with COVID-19, point of view

Francesco Ferrara et al.

Summary: The scientific community is actively searching for new antiviral drugs and therapies to combat SARS-CoV-2. Paxlovid, an oral antiviral, has recently been authorized and has shown good efficacy in reducing the risk of hospitalization in COVID-19 patients. Remdesivir is another authorized antiviral for treating SARS-CoV-2 infection. However, there is still limited data in the literature regarding the safety profile and risk of generating antiviral-resistant variants. This manuscript discusses the monotherapy use of paxlovid and remdesivir, as well as the scientific hypothesis of combining nirmatrelvir and remdesivir to increase treatment efficacy, reduce adverse reactions, and prevent antiviral drug resistance.

Antimicrobial Resistance Threats in the emerging COVID-19 pandemic: Where do we stand?

Soumya Ghosh et al.

Summary: During the COVID-19 pandemic, misuse of antibiotics can have disastrous effects on antimicrobial resistance management and antibiotic stewardship programs, especially for patients with bacterial coinfections. Proper control policies and prioritization of antibiotic stewardship plans are crucial in regions with high levels of AMR.
