Behaviour of Compacted Filtered Iron Ore Tailings-Portland Cement Blends: New Brazilian Trend for Tailings Disposal by Stacking

Nilo Cesar Consoli et al.

Summary: Recent failures of tailings dams in Brazil due to liquefaction have led to restrictions on the construction of new dams by the government. This study proposes a new trend for tailings disposal by stacking compacted filtered ore tailings-Portland cement blends.

Stabilization of gold mining tailings with alkali-activated carbide lime and sugarcane bagasse ash

Carolina Pereira dos Santos et al.

Summary: This study investigates the mechanical behavior of gold tailings stabilized with alkali-activated carbide lime and sugarcane bagasse ash. The results showed that while the alternative cement had lower strength, stiffness, and durability compared to Portland cement, it still improved the mechanical behavior of the gold tailings. Reduction in porosity and increase in cement content led to improvements in the mechanical behavior of all specimens. The porosity/binder index was a viable dosage method for predicting the mechanical behavior of stabilized gold tailings.

Procedure for assessing the liquefaction vulnerability of tailings dams

Osvaldo Ledesma et al.

Summary: This paper presents a procedure to assess the vulnerability of tailings dams to failure due to flow liquefaction and tests it using the Funda similar to o Dam failure case. The procedure involves using a numerical model and analyzing three actions that cover most stress paths leading to dam failure. It demonstrates that the proposed procedure can be used with currently available modeling tools and standard laboratory and field characterization.

Full cost accounting: A missing consideration in global tailings dam management

Roger L. Burritt et al.

Summary: This conceptual paper argues that full cost accounting could fill a gap in the new Global Industry Tailings Management Standard by bringing knowledge of externalities to account. The current shortcomings in tailings dam management require the inclusion of external costs for improved decision-making, as highlighted in this paper's recommendations for integrating full cost accounting into best practice tailings management.

A method for assessing the long-term integrity of tailings dams

G. R. Hancock

Summary: Mine tailings are waste products that need to be managed due to their high erosion potential and unwanted mineral content. Assessing long-term erosion behavior of tailings dams is important and can be improved using Landscape Evolution Models. Different designs of tailings dams can have varying erosion rates, with potential for long-term encapsulation of tailings if properly maintained.

Parameters controlling loss of mass and stiffness degradation of 'green' stabilised tailings

Giovani Jordi Bruschi et al.

Summary: The importance of effective binders with low environmental impacts for sustainable engineering practices was highlighted in this study. The study evaluated parameters controlling loss of mass and stiffness degradation of 'green' stabilised bauxite tailings (BT) and introduced a porosity/binder index to rationalize dosage methodology. The study also compared the performance of alkali-activated binder with sugarcane bagasse ash and carbide lime with that of Portland cement, showing that lower porosity and higher cement content resulted in better mechanical performance.

Mineralogical Characterization Applied to Iron Ore Tailings from the Desliming Stage with Emphasis on Quantitative Electron Microscopy (QEM)

Arley Henrique de Souza et al.

Summary: The search for alternatives to minimize tailings generation and enable their reuse involves characterization studies to understand the properties of iron ore tailings. A more detailed characterization of the tailings contributes to improving mineral processing and recycling of tailings. Mineralogical characterization plays a key role in proposing alternatives to improve ore beneficiation and tailings reuse.
