Crop producers' technical efficiency and its determinants in Gurage zone, Ethiopia: A comparative analysis using rural-urban migration as a parameter

Summary: This study investigates the technical efficiency of crop-producing households in Gurage Zone, Ethiopia, and the factors influencing it. It compares rural-urban migration as a measure and finds that age of the household head and distance from a neighboring town have negative impact on technical inefficiency, while factors such as schooling, soil infertility, migratory experience, and proximity to a market have positive effects on technical efficiency. Recommendations include optimizing agricultural inputs, improving soil fertility, and addressing technological inefficiencies.

Land use and land cover changes driven by expansion of eucalypt plantations in the Western Gurage Watersheds, Centeral-south Ethiopia

Summary: The study identified that the expansion of eucalypt plantations has led to changes in land use and land cover, driven primarily by factors such as population growth, religious celebrations, land degradation and conservation, road development, and increased access to markets. The total forest cover in the study area has fluctuated over the past 30 years due to the expansion of eucalypts into bare land, grazing land, and cereal crop land use types.
