Psychometric Properties of Instruments Measuring Dyadic Communication and Environment in Dementia Care: A Systematic Review

Summary: This review summarized the characteristics and evaluated the psychometric properties of instruments assessing dyadic communication and environment between persons with dementia and their caregivers. The study found that the existing instruments are still in the early stages of development and validation in the dementia population, and further testing and validation are needed.

Mealtime caregiving knowledge, attitudes, and behaviors for persons living with dementia: A systematic review of psychometric properties of instruments

Summary: This systematic review aimed to evaluate the psychometric properties of instruments used to assess mealtime caregiving knowledge, attitudes, skills, and behaviors for people with dementia. Out of 19 eligible instruments identified, most were found to have low psychometric quality, except for the Mealtime Engagement Scale which exhibited moderate psychometric quality in assessing mealtime engagement with dementia patients. Further testing of the Mealtime Engagement Scale in larger diverse samples and care settings is needed to accumulate more psychometric evidence and broaden its use.

Objective and Subjective Clinical Swallowing Outcomes via Telehealth: Reliability in Outpatient Clinical Practice

Summary: This study found that subjective observations of oral intake and objective measures taken from the TWST and the TOMASS can be reliably measured via telehealth in clinical practice. Interrater reliability was good to excellent for most measures, with some exceptions for certain TOMASS outcomes. Additionally, factors such as video quality, camera stability, and obstruction of the patient's mouth were found to potentially impact reliability.

Summary: This study evaluated the impact of changes in oral health and chewing efficiency on the oral-health-related quality of life (OHRQoL) of nursing-home residents. The results showed that a decrease in functional occluding pairs and an increase in dental-treatment needs had negative effects on OHRQoL, with deterioration of denture condition being a significant predictor for decline in OHRQoL among denture wearers.

Dyadic interactions and physical and social environment in dementia mealtime care: a systematic review of instruments

Summary: This systematic review examined instruments used to measure dyadic interactions and physical/social dining environments during mealtime care for persons with dementia. It identified 26 instruments, with most showing low psychometric quality, except for the refined CUED mealtime video-coding scheme rated as moderate quality. Further validation and testing in clinical settings is needed for all instruments.

A Retrospective Analysis of Swallowing Function and Physiology in Patients Living with Dementia

Summary: This study aimed to describe the pathophysiology of dysphagia in patients living with dementia by analyzing swallowing physiology data from a sample of 106 adults. Significant differences in various swallowing parameters were found compared to published norms, and unsafe swallowing and clinically significant residue were common. Associations between specific swallowing measures and dysfunction were identified, highlighting the need for further research on different variables affecting dysphagia in dementia patients.
