Tuning oxygen-containing functional groups of graphene for supercapacitors with high stability

Shiqi Lin et al.

Summary: The relationship between oxygen-containing functional groups in graphene and supercapacitor stability was investigated. Different oxygenic functional groups were introduced in reduced graphene oxide (rGO) by varying the reduction time. The study revealed that longer reduction time resulted in restoration of the sp(2) structure in the rGO sheet, increased crystallinity, and removal of oxygenic functional groups. The presence of oxygenic functional groups contributed to pseudocapacitance and larger specific capacitance, but also led to poorer rate performance and durability. By extending the reduction time, the oxygenic functional groups can be effectively removed and the stability of rGO can be improved.

Modification of Biomass-Derived Nanoporous Carbon with Nickel Oxide Nanoparticles for Supercapacitor Application

Bakhytzhan Lesbayev et al.

Summary: The purpose of this study is to develop a synthesis and modification method of carbon material to improve the electrochemical characteristics of a supercapacitor. By varying the processes and parameters of carbonization, mechanoactivation, and thermochemical activation, nanoporous carbon with a specific surface area of 2200 (+/- 50) m(2)/g was obtained from walnut shells. In addition, the resulting nanoporous carbon was modified with nickel oxide (NiO) nanoparticles to increase the specific capacitance of the supercapacitor electrode by 16%.

Bacteria-loaded graphene bioanode for renewable energy generation

Xuanye Leng et al.

Summary: The high electrical conductivity and low dimensionality of graphene are crucial for lightweight bioanodes in new-generation energy technologies. However, integrating graphene in biointerfaces is challenging due to its incompatible surface energy with living matter. We propose a sustainable chemical control method to achieve the desired surface hydrophilicity and conductivity of graphene nanowalls, enabling the formation of a lightweight, graphene-based, sponge bioanode. This novel graphene-based material shows stable and rapid response, with a biocurrent density of 135.35 mA m(-2) achieved within a few hours.

CVD nanocrystalline multilayer graphene coated 3D-printed alumina lattices

Cristina Ramirez et al.

Summary: 3D printing technologies combined with chemical vapor deposition can be used to fabricate new hybrid materials with tunable properties. The thickness and crystallinity of graphene-based coatings can be controlled by altering the parameters of chemical vapor deposition. Transmission electron microscopy confirms the successful growth of nanocrystalline graphene layers on 3D printed α-Al2O3 substrates, resulting in fully-connected and highly conductive pathways. In terms of thermal conductivity, specimens decorated with graphitic coatings exhibit higher thermal conductivity compared to bare ceramic scaffolds.
