Fabrication of 3D Printed poly(lactic acid) strut and wet-electrospun cellulose nano fiber reinforced chitosan-collagen hydrogel composite scaffolds for meniscus tissue engineering

Oylum Colpankan Gunes et al.

Summary: The study aimed to develop chitosan-collagen hydrogel composite scaffolds for meniscus cartilage tissue engineering. By incorporating poly(lactic acid) struts and nanofibrous cellulose into the matrix, the scaffold exhibited favorable cellular activities and mechanical properties. All the hydrogel composite scaffolds had interconnected microporous structures and similar swelling ratios and water content values to native cartilage extracellular matrix. The compressive strength of the scaffolds was suitable for cartilage tissue engineering applications. The scaffold containing 0.3% genipin showed the highest tan delta value at a frequency of 1Hz. In vitro analysis demonstrated that this scaffold had no cytotoxic effects and facilitated cell attachment, proliferation, and migration.

Poly(lactic acid) composites with few layer graphene produced by noncovalent chemistry

Tania Peixoto et al.

Summary: This study reports on the preparation of few-layer graphene (FLG) and its respective PLA-based composites using an eco-friendly, efficient, and cost-effective approach. The influence of FLG on the morphology, crystallinity, thermal, and mechanical properties of the PLA composites was investigated. The composites with a loading of 0.05 wt% demonstrated suitability for potential applications where product safety is crucial.

Compression Performance and Failure Analysis of 3D-Printed Carbon Fiber/PLA Composite TPMS Lattice Structures

Mustafa Saleh et al.

Summary: This study explores the factors influencing the mechanical properties and failure modes of lattice structures based on TPMS. The results show that the incorporation of CF, the type and size of unit cells, and the relative density all have impacts on the compressive modulus, compressive strength, and specific energy absorption. The Diamond structure performs the best in these aspects, while pure PLA-based structures slightly outperform Gyroid and Primitive structures in terms of compressive strength and specific absorption energy.

Antibacterial approaches in tissue engineering using metal ions and nanoparticles: From mechanisms to applications

Maria Godoy-Gallardo et al.

Summary: Bacterial infection of implanted scaffolds is a serious threat, especially with the rise of multidrug resistance. Metal ions and ion nanoparticles have shown potential in reducing or eliminating bacteria through mechanisms like oxidative stress induction and disruption of biomolecules. Combining different metal ions and nanoparticles can lead to synergistic effects and improved microbial killing, with reduced potential side effects to the host.

Dynamic Mechanical Behavior of Graphene Oxide Functionalized Curaua Fiber-Reinforced Epoxy Composites: A Brief Report

Ulisses Oliveira Costa et al.

Summary: Coating natural fibers with graphene oxide has been a successful method to enhance adhesion to polymer matrices and improve composite properties. The study showed that GO-functionalized curaua fiber reinforced epoxy composites exhibited superior tensile and thermogravimetric properties, as well as higher interfacial shear strength. DMA analysis indicated that the GO functionalization of curaua fibers improved the storage and loss moduli of the composites.
