Gender stereotypes about interests start early and cause gender disparities in computer science and engineering

Allison Master et al.

Summary: Research shows that children as young as six years old and adolescents of various racial/ethnic backgrounds endorse stereotypes that girls are less interested than boys in computer science and engineering. Girls who internalize gender-interest stereotypes in favor of boys in these fields tend to have lower interest and sense of belonging in them. Early emergence of stereotypes about gender differences in interest in computer science and engineering may contribute to gender disparities in these fields.
