One-Year Outcome Trajectories and Factors Associated with Functional Recovery Among Survivors of Intracerebral and Intraventricular Hemorrhage With Initial Severe Disability

Vishank A. Shah et al.

Summary: Among survivors of severe intracerebral hemorrhage (ICH) and intraventricular hemorrhage (IVH) with initial poor functional outcome, more than 40% recovered to a good outcome by 1 year. Hospital events were strongly associated with long-term functional recovery and may be potential targets for intervention. Avoiding early pessimistic prognostication and delaying prognostication until after treatment may improve the ability to predict future recovery.

Red Cell Distribution Width is Associated with 30-day Mortality in Patients with Spontaneous Intracerebral Hemorrhage

Summary: This study investigated the potential prognostic marker role of RDW in patients with intracerebral hemorrhage and found that higher RDW values were significantly associated with increased 30-day mortality, but not with mortality after 30 days.

Association of baseline hematoma and edema volumes with one-year outcome and long-term survival after spontaneous intracerebral hemorrhage: A community-based inception cohort study

James J. M. Loan et al.

Summary: This study investigated the association between peri-hematomal edema and intracerebral hemorrhage volume with one-year functional outcome and long-term survival in spontaneous intracerebral hemorrhage patients. The results showed that intracerebral hemorrhage volume and total lesion volume were independently associated with death or dependence one year after intracerebral hemorrhage, while peri-hematomal edema volume was not.

Sustained Low-Efficiency Dialysis is Associated with Worsening Cerebral Edema and Outcomes in Intracerebral Hemorrhage

Alireza Shirazian et al.

Summary: SLED treatment in ICH patients with CKD was associated with a significant increase in the rate and frequency of PHE expansion, leading to worse patient outcomes. Patients with CKD who received SLED treatment had larger PHE growth compared to untreated CKD patients, and those who received RRT had significantly worse functional and mortality outcomes.

Global, regional, and national burden of stroke and its risk factors, 1990-2019: a systematic analysis for the Global Burden of Disease Study 2019

Valery L. Feigin et al.

Summary: Regularly updated data on stroke including incidence, prevalence, mortality, disability, risk factors, and trends are crucial for evidence-based care planning. The Global Burden of Diseases Study provides comprehensive measurement of these metrics. From 1990 to 2019, while age-standardized rates improved, the number of strokes and deaths increased. Low-income countries had the highest stroke-related mortality and DALY rates, with high body-mass index being the fastest-growing risk factor.

The Hounsfield Unit of Perihematomal Edema Is Associated With Poor Clinical Outcomes in Intracerebral Hemorrhage

Summary: The mean Hounsfield unit (HU) of perihématomal edema (PHE) at 72 hours after intracerebral hemorrhage (ICH) is negatively correlated with poor prognosis, and has a better predictive ability compared to other PHE measures.

Upregulation of AQP4 Improves Blood-Brain Barrier Integrity and Perihematomal Edema Following Intracerebral Hemorrhage

Hanwool Jeon et al.

Summary: Intracerebral hemorrhage (ICH) can lead to delayed cerebral edema due to disruption of the blood-brain barrier (BBB), with perihematomal edema (PHE) considered a major factor in morbidity and mortality. The water channel AQP4 on astrocytes plays a crucial role in PHE formation, influenced by reactive oxygen species (ROS) from the hemorrhage. Modulating AQP4 may present a potential therapeutic target for alleviating delayed cerebral edema in ICH.

Summary: An increase in PHE volume of more than 7.98 mL from baseline to day 3 may result in poor outcomes. Patients with diabetes mellitus, black hole sign, and large initial hematoma volume are more likely to experience PHE growth, which should be addressed in treatment.

Perihematomal Edema and Clinical Outcome in Intracerebral Hemorrhage Related to Different Oral Anticoagulants

Jawed Nawabi et al.

Summary: This study found that patients with oral anticoagulant-associated intracerebral hemorrhage (OAC-ICH) had lower levels of perihematomal edema (PHE) in the early stages compared to those with non-oral anticoagulant-associated intracerebral hemorrhage (NON-OAC-ICH), with NOAC patients also exhibiting significantly lower levels of edema expansion distance compared to NON-OAC-ICH patients. The increase in early PHE volume did not increase the likelihood of poor outcomes in OAC-ICH, but was independently associated with poor outcomes in NON-OAC-ICH.
