Performance of creatinine-based equations to estimate glomerular filtration rate in White and Black populations in Europe, Brazil and Africa

Pierre Delanaye et al.

Summary: This study compared and validated the performance of the new Chronic Kidney Disease Epidemiology Collaboration equation (CKD-EPIAS) with the European Kidney Function Consortium (EKFC) and Lund-Malmo Revised (LMREV) equations in European and African cohorts. The results showed that the EKFC equation had the best performance in both European and African populations, while CKD-EPIAS had suboptimal performance.

Utility of the CHA2DS2-VASc score for predicting ischaemic stroke in patients with or without atrial fibrillation: a systematic review and meta-analysis

Tariq Jamal Siddiqi et al.

Summary: This meta-analysis suggests that the discrimination power of the CHA(2)DS(2)-VASc score in predicting ischaemic stroke is modest, and is similar in the presence or absence of NVAF. More accurate stroke prediction models are thus needed for the NVAF population.

Association of Intraindividual Difference in Estimated Glomerular Filtration Rate by Creatinine vs Cystatin C and End-stage Kidney Disease and Mortality

Summary: In patients with CKD, the differences between eGFRcys and eGFRcr are common, and these differences and their changes over time may indicate risks of ESKD and mortality.

Summary: The study found that while multimorbidity was less common in UK Biobank, as the level of multimorbidity increased, UK Biobank underestimated the risk associated with multimorbidity, especially for LTC counts above 3 or specific LTC combinations.

Muscle mass and estimates of renal function: a longitudinal cohort study

Dion Groothof et al.

Summary: This study investigated the effects of creatinine excretion rate on the estimation of glomerular filtration rate (GFR), and found that low muscle mass might lead to overestimation of renal function. Using muscle mass-independent markers, such as cystatin C, is crucial for accurately assessing renal function in settings of low muscle mass or muscle wasting.

Gender differences in cardiometabolic health and disease in a cross-sectional observational obesity study

Christina Strack et al.

Summary: In addition to the degree of obesity, the pattern of fat distribution has a significant influence on cardiometabolic risk. This study found that, within the category of obesity, markers of abdominal obesity were higher in men, while %fat mass and the fat mass/lean mass ratio were higher in women. The prevalence of the MetS was higher in obese men, but metabolically healthy obesity was more common among women. Sex differences were observed in various cardiometabolic risk factors, such as HDL-cholesterol, triglycerides, fasting glucose, insulin and HOMA-IR levels, ALAT, adiponectin, and sE-selectin.

Association of Intra-individual Differences in Estimated GFR by Creatinine Versus Cystatin C With Incident Heart Failure

Summary: The differential between eGFR(cys) and eGFR(cr) is associated with the risk of heart failure among patients with chronic kidney disease. Diverging slopes over time between eGFR(cys) and eGFR(cr) are also independently associated with the risk of heart failure.

Cardiometabolic Risk Factors and Incident Cardiovascular Disease Events in Women vs Men With Type 1 Diabetes

Barbara H. Braffett et al.

Summary: Despite a more favorable cardiometabolic risk factor profile, women with type 1 diabetes did not have a significantly lower cardiovascular disease event burden than men, suggesting a greater clinical impact of cardiometabolic risk factors in women with diabetes. These findings call for conscientious optimization of the control of cardiovascular disease risk factors in women with type 1 diabetes.

Global, regional, and national burden of stroke and its risk factors, 1990-2019: a systematic analysis for the Global Burden of Disease Study 2019

Valery L. Feigin et al.

Summary: Regularly updated data on stroke including incidence, prevalence, mortality, disability, risk factors, and trends are crucial for evidence-based care planning. The Global Burden of Diseases Study provides comprehensive measurement of these metrics. From 1990 to 2019, while age-standardized rates improved, the number of strokes and deaths increased. Low-income countries had the highest stroke-related mortality and DALY rates, with high body-mass index being the fastest-growing risk factor.
