Latinx identification with whiteness: What drives it, and what effects does it have on political preferences?

Summary: This study examines the factors that determine Latinx people's self-categorization as white and the salience of white identity, as well as the effects of these factors on their political preferences. The findings indicate that Latinx individuals with a stronger Latino consciousness and higher education level are less likely to identify as white, while those with higher income are more likely to do so. Additionally, the study finds that the salience of white identity is positively correlated with being a Republican, holding conservative beliefs, and opposing welfare, but it does not significantly predict anti-immigrant policy preferences.
