Optocapacitance: physical basis and its application

Bernardo I. Pinto et al.

Summary: The observation of an increase in membrane capacitance with temperature has led to the development of new methods for neuronal stimulation using light. The optocapacitive effect refers to the change in capacitance induced by the heating of the membrane through light, producing an optocapacitive current that depolarizes cells and can be used for stimulating excitable tissues. In this article, we discuss the underlying membrane properties of optocapacitance, the characteristics of the optocapacitive current, its applications in neuronal stimulation, and the challenges for its in vivo use.

Current Review of Optical Neural Interfaces for Clinical Applications

Younghoon Park et al.

Summary: Neural interfaces, crucial in understanding the brain and serving as neural prostheses, have traditionally been based on electrical transduction. However, optical methods have gained attention for their high spatial selectivity and decreased invasiveness in connecting neurons to the external world. This review discusses the current state-of-art of optical neural interfaces, dividing them into optical control and optical readout categories and comparing their relative performance.
