Hypnotherapy for irritable bowel syndrome: patient expectations and perceptions

Summary: This study demonstrates the effectiveness of hypnotherapy in improving symptoms and quality of life in patients with irritable bowel syndrome (IBS). Patient expectations and perceptions of the treatment were also recorded, showing that initial skepticism and apprehension were replaced with enthusiasm after treatment. Expectations did not necessarily influence treatment outcomes.

Questions regarding the maintenance of the therapeutic alliance, the development of the analytic process, the sensitivity to unconscious communication, and the indication for certain types of patients in remote sessions still need further investigation.

The symptom burden of Irritable Bowel Syndrome in tertiary care during the COVID-19 pandemic

Summary: This study demonstrates that patients with refractory IBS seen in tertiary care during the COVID-19 pandemic experienced significantly higher symptom burden, highlighting the importance of the gut-brain axis in IBS. Lack of support and perceived loss of control appear to be contributing factors.
