Information and communication technologies role in alleviating poverty in Sub-Saharan Africa: Impacts and transmission channels

Atif Awad

Summary: Research suggests that information and communication technologies (ICTs) have the potential to alleviate poverty in developing countries. However, the mechanisms through which ICT reduces poverty have not been sufficiently tested. This study examined the effects of ICT on poverty reduction in 37 economies in Sub-Saharan Africa from 2003 to 2019. The findings indicate that ICT can positively impact poverty through employment, per capita income, and institutional quality, but negatively impact poverty through environmental quality. Overall, incorporating pro-poor ICT policies is crucial for poverty reduction strategies in Sub-Saharan Africa.

The findings emphasize the importance of addressing financial and governance barriers to improve electricity infrastructure development in the region.

This paper provides new insights by emphasizing the role of political power distribution in the corruption-income inequality nexus. Lower levels of corruption are associated with reduced inequalities worldwide, but this counter-intuitive relationship is only found in developing countries due to the uneven distribution of political power, where non-dominant groups engage in corruption to access public services or support their income-generating activities.
