Less pollution under a more centralized environmental system: Evidence from vertical environmental reforms in China

Chao Han et al.

Summary: This paper investigates the impact of environmental centralizing reforms on SO2 emissions from polluting firms in China. The findings indicate that these reforms resulted in a 10.6% reduction in SO2 emissions and a 9.6% decrease in the installation of coal boilers. Moreover, firms that play significant roles in local employment and tax revenue experienced a greater decrease in their SO2 emissions. Additionally, firms located near county borders were more affected by these reforms.

Import competition, heterogeneous preferences of managers, and productivity

Cheng Chen et al.

Summary: Family-managed firms show greater adaptability to import competition, responding by increasing productivity to meet challenges, especially in cases of initially low productivity. These improvements are primarily driven by family managers, who strategically reduce material usage to enhance efficiency and cash flow. Productivity improvements are particularly pronounced in multi-generational family firms.
