Trade-off between environmental sustainability and economic growth through coal consumption and natural resources exploitation in China: New policy insights from wavelet local multiple correlation

Tomiwa Sunday Adebayo

Summary: Challenges brought on by rapid economic growth in China include the depletion of natural resources and environmental deterioration. This study evaluates the time-frequency nexus between CO2 emissions, natural resources, coal consumption, and economic growth using data from 1970 to 2020. The findings show that economic growth, coal consumption, and natural resources positively drive CO2 emissions at all frequencies, leading to environmental degradation. This study has significant implications for policy-making.

Do nuclear energy and renewable energy surge environmental quality in the United States? New insights from novel bootstrap Fourier Granger causality in quantiles approach

Mustafa Tevfik Kartal et al.

Summary: With the growing discussion on climate change mitigation, transitioning to clean energy is a critical challenge. This study evaluates the impact of nuclear and renewable energy consumption on ecological quality, measured by carbon dioxide emissions, ecological footprint, and load capacity factor, considering the role of financial development and economic growth. Using a novel approach, the empirical results show that nuclear energy, renewable energy, and financial development contribute to ecological improvement, while economic growth negatively affects ecological quality in higher quantiles. These findings emphasize the importance of government measures that support the transition to nuclear energy and ecological sustainability for better environmental quality.

A Wavelet Analysis of the Dynamic Connectedness among Oil Prices, Green Bonds, and CO2 Emissions

Nini Johana Marin-Rodriguez et al.

Summary: The study utilizes wavelet power spectrum (WPS) and wavelet coherence analyses (WCA) to investigate the co-movements among oil prices, green bonds, and CO2 emissions based on daily data from January 2014 to October 2022. The findings reveal significant volatility in oil returns, the Green Bond Index, and CO2 futures' returns at various frequencies during different periods. The analysis shows a negative impact of oil returns on the Green Bond Index in the medium term and a strong interdependence between oil prices and CO2 futures' returns across short, medium, and long terms.

Effects of idiosyncratic jumps and co-jumps on oil, gold, and copper markets

Summary: This paper examines the effects of systematic and idiosyncratic jumps on intraday correlations, portfolio allocation decisions, and diversification benefits of oil, gold, and copper futures prices. The results show that co-jumps in the same direction increase correlations and reduce diversification benefits, while co-jumps in the opposite direction decrease correlations and improve diversification. Risk-averse investors' portfolio allocations are influenced by idiosyncratic jumps in oil and copper markets, but not by co-jumps, with systematic risks affecting allocations to copper and oil. Diversification benefits from price discontinuities are overall positive, driven by idiosyncratic jumps in oil and copper markets.

Summary: The study found that information leakage plays a crucial role in the impacts of the oil price war, with negative impacts from the outbreak being more durable than positive impacts from the truce. The magnitude of impacts on futures markets is negatively correlated with the time-to-maturity of futures, and negative crude oil prices affect West Texas Intermediate crude oil markets the most. The findings suggest that market participants could perceive and adjust to market changes, mitigating the impacts of the oil price war.
