Practicing conjunctural methodologies: Engaging Chinese capitalism

Jamie Peck

Summary: Conjunctural analysis is a mysterious practice that is observed mostly after the fact and is resistant to codification. It combines reflexive theorizing with socially engaged inquiry and context-rich analysis. This article discusses the methodological implications of conjunctural analysis, such as attention to causal codetermination, relational inquiry, stress-testing of theory claims, and reflexivity. It then interrogates these methodological dispositions and propositions by examining the case of Chinese capitalism.
