Do PRO Measures Function the Same Way for all Individuals With Heart Failure?

Theresa M. Coles et al.

Summary: Women diagnosed with heart failure report worse quality of life than men on PRO measures. The assumption that women and men interpret quality of life questions the same way is crucial for valid comparison and combining outcomes by subgroups in heart failure. This issue not only affects clinical trials, but also has important implications for addressing health inequities. The validity of PRO measures is key to interpreting differences in heart failure outcomes.

Investigating gender-based differential item functioning on the Kansas City Cardiomyopathy Questionnaire (KCCQ) using qualitative content analysis

Theresa M. Coles et al.

Summary: The purpose of this study is to evaluate potential gender-based differences in interpreting the KCCQ-23 and explore aspects of HRQOL not captured by the questionnaire. The findings indicate that there were no significant differences in interpreting the questionnaire between men and women, but some modifications may improve interpretation for a wide range of patients.
