On the existence of orthorhombic martensite in a near-α titanium base alloy used for additive manufacturing

Christian Fleissner-Rieger et al.

Summary: Additive manufacturing is an advanced production technology used to produce tailor-made and highly complex parts. This study focuses on the implementation of a 'softer' orthorhombic martensitic phase in titanium alloys by accelerating the solidification process, aiming to reduce residual stresses and explore new opportunities for additive manufacturing. Various sophisticated characterization techniques were applied to analyze this martensitic phase in detail.

Grain refinement mechanisms of alloying molybdenum with carbon manufactured by laser powder bed fusion

J. Braun et al.

Summary: In this study, different molybdenum-carbon alloys were produced using additive laser powder bed fusion (LPBF), and the grain size, tensile strength, and hardness of the alloys were investigated. It was found that alloying molybdenum with carbon can reduce cracks, increase density, and improve tensile strength.

Summary: This study investigates the correlations between volumetric energy density and structural features of in-situ Ti-5 wt.% Cu alloys produced by Laser powder bed fusion method, highlighting the importance of selecting constituent sizes based on thermophysical properties. Results show that with increasing volumetric energy density, crystallite size and lattice distortion of the a phase in the alloy increase, leading to improved isotropy of the microstructure at higher VEDs.

Martensite formation in titanium alloys: Crystallographic and compositional effects

Madeleine Bignon et al.

Summary: The study proposes an explanation for the inhibition of martensite beyond characteristic concentration thresholds in titanium binary alloys, combining the phenomenological theory of martensite crystallography and thermodynamic calculations. It shows that martensite formation can be prevented crystallographically while still being thermodynamically favorable. By considering the influence of composition, two twinning systems and two glide systems are identified to produce the lattice invariant shear, with computed critical concentrations for martensite formation aligning well with experimental results. The method may serve as a guide for designing titanium alloys with controlled martensitic behavior.

In-situ alloying in laser-based additive manufacturing processes: A critical review

Mohammad Hossein Mosallanejad et al.

Summary: The current challenge in additive manufacturing lies in the availability and cost of feedstock, with a growing number of studies focusing on in-situ alloying using elemental blends rather than pre-alloyed powders. This strategy provides greater flexibility to additive manufacturing methods, paving the way towards meeting the industry's evolving needs.

Characterization of Ti6Al4V powders produced by different methods for selective laser melting

Bo Xie et al.

Summary: This study compared Ti6Al4V powders produced by three methods in terms of shape, microstructure, and forming properties. The results showed that PA produced the smoothest powder with the best flowability, and EIGA powder displayed a good balance of strength and ductility in SLM. The EIGA method was recommended as the best choice considering cost and performance.
