Impacts of COVID-19 on dynamic return and volatility spillovers between rare earth metals and renewable energy stock markets

Waqas Hanif et al.

Summary: We examine the time-frequency co-movements and return and volatility spillovers between rare earths and major renewable energy stocks. Our findings show that the COVID-19 crisis has led to a significant increase in co-movements and spillovers in returns and volatility between these sectors. Rare earths act as net recipients of spillovers, while clean energy stocks are net transmitters before and during the pandemic. Our results suggest the importance of portfolio rebalancing during crises.

Quantile risk spillovers between energy and agricultural commodity markets: Evidence from pre and during COVID-19 outbreak

Aviral Kumar Tiwari et al.

Summary: The spillover effect is an important factor affecting the volatility of commodity prices. This research uses the rolling window-based Quantile VAR (QVAR) model to analyze the conditional volatility spillover between energy, biofuel, and agricultural commodity markets. The study finds that systematic risk spillovers are more significant in extreme market conditions and that agricultural markets dominate energy markets. Additionally, there are significant variations in volatility spillovers and connectedness across markets before and during the COVID-19 outbreak. The findings have useful implications for investors' portfolios and risk avoidance.

Dynamic spillover transmission in agricultural commodity markets: What has changed after the COVID-19 threat?

Malgorzata Just et al.

Summary: This paper applies dynamic Diebold-Yilmaz and Barunik-Krehlik spillover indices to demonstrate a closer integration among agricultural commodity markets after the threat of COVID-19 to the Russia-Ukraine war. The study identifies record return spillover transmission among agricultural commodities during the conflict, with wheat, maize, and barley being the strongest transmitters. The findings highlight increasing uncertainty in the global food market.

Connectedness between oil and agricultural commodity prices during tranquil and volatile period. Is crude oil a victim indeed?

Yanpeng Sun et al.

Summary: The increasing financialization of energy and commodity markets presents tradeoffs for investors and consumers, with the long-term study showing bidirectional causality between oil and agricultural commodity prices. Surprisingly, both agricultural commodity prices and oil prices remained immune to shocks during the COVID-19 pandemic.

Structure dependence between oil and agricultural commodities returns: The role of geopolitical risks

Aviral Kumar Tiwari et al.

Summary: The study found a strong co-movement between energy markets and agricultural markets, which is negatively influenced by geopolitical risks. Agricultural commodities, particularly corn, oats, and wheat, are suggested to have the ability to act as a hedge against oil price downturns caused by geopolitical unrest. Additionally, agricultural and oil markets are negatively correlated when agricultural markets are bullish and oil markets are bearish.

Coherence, extreme risk spillovers, and dynamic linkages between oil and China?s commodity futures markets

Jinxin Cui et al.

Summary: This paper examines the time-frequency dependence, extreme risk spillovers, and dynamic linkages between oil and China's commodity futures markets using wavelet coherence, quantile connectedness approach, and the DECO-FIAPARCH (1,d,1) model. The results suggest that the oil market has higher coherence with copper, natural rubber, and fuel oil futures but lower coherence with corn, soybean, soybean meal, and white sugar futures in the long term. The DECO model indicates time-varying and low average equi-correlations between oil and China's commodity futures. Total risk connectedness at the extreme lower quantile level (0.01) is higher than the conditional mean and conditional median level.

Summary: The study reveals that there is a significant and rarely negative correlation between cryptocurrencies and stock markets during the pandemic. Cryptocurrencies may not be a strong hedge or safe haven against stock markets, but can play a diversifying role in mitigating risks, especially in extreme situations.

Risk contagions between global oil markets and China's agricultural commodity markets under structural breaks

Jiawen Luo et al.

Summary: This article investigates the linear and non-linear dependence structures of risk contagions between global crude oil futures markets and China's agricultural futures markets using an RSSN model. The empirical results show significant correlation and covariance contagions across oil and agriculture futures returns, especially under turbulent oil market conditions. DAG results support volatility contagions from world oil future markets to China's agricultural commodity futures markets.
